5172.1 | Cable Problem?

| 20 Hex lower can be a bad connection on Bit 5 of the parallel port. It
could be the cable. The CIA chip in the Amiga or the Printer. I cannot
remember which CIA chip was the parallel port. But if the cable checks out
try swapping the CIA chips in the Amiga around. If you got a bad CIA your
symptoms will change, into a Floppy problem? I do not have the schematic
with me so I am working from memory. Be careful these are static sensitive
devices. If you have not already you might try testing the printer and cable
on another Computer before opening up your Amiga.

| re: .1,
The printer works fine on other systems; I sincerely hope this is "only" a cable problem and
NOT a CIA chip problem - this is a 1 1/2 month-old A500.
Why am I not getting 20 hex lower on all characters, incl. the numerics?
Confused Peter.

5172.3 | Might not be an open

| Actually relooking at .0 it looks like a sending an 'a' printed a '!' so a
a is a hex 61 a ! is a hex 21 it dropped bit 6 (40 hex). the numbers 0 - 9 are hex 30
through hex 39. Bit six is clear. But then a b (hex 62) should have printed
" or hex 22.
Do you have a multi meter. Its a pain but you should be able to check the
cable. Yuo could also have two conductors making contact.
Also if your Amiga 500 is only 1.5 months old you should still have
warranty coverage.

| Alan,
I took the cable back to the dealer and tested it there; it failed the test. They dicn't
have another new || cable, so I exchanged it for a serial, temporarily. (The Toshiba
can accept either.)
Thanks for your assistance, as well as Randy Meyers'. I've learned a lot from the
experience.
Pellis.
