5168.0. "IDE hard drives -- something to avoid?" by RTPSWS::ZIMMERMAN () Sat Nov 02 1991 04:17

I've been thinking of getting an ICD AD-IDE internal drive for
my A500, but a noter over in the PC notesfile came down real
hard on IDE technology. He claimed that IDE drives were prone
to failure, data transfer was slow (compared to SCSI), and that
IDE was a dead-end approach, the preferred route being SCSI.

The packages I've seen usually include Quantum LPS drives, which
I always thought was quality gear, but I'm not a drive expert.

Assuming that A500 warranty and similar issues aren't a problem,
is there any reason to avoid an internal IDE solution and to
prefer something like a GVP A500HD+? Has anyone tried an
    AD-IDE?

    Thanks,

    - Cliff

Low end, mass-market PCs seem to all be using IDE drives these days.
The higher-end server models stick with SCSI.

It's not really fair to say that IDE drives are slow - they're not.
The drive mechanisms are the same as the SCSI versions. They do have
some limitations... they cannot be low-level formatted by the user, and
IDE only supports two devices versus seven for SCSI.

My Quantum 105 MB IDE drive turns in about 600 KB/sec on a 33 MHz 386.
The same type of drive on my SCSI Amiga 2000 was a bit faster.
