5163.0. "Corrupted Hard Disk" by HEAVY::JAMIE (Thunder knows all things.) Thu Oct 31 1991 03:49

I've just defragmented my hard disk using QB tools and stupidly didn't
bother backing up the drive first (lack of floppies). When I rebooted
I got the hand holding the disk on my screen so my HD wasn't
autobooting. Now, I've pretty well resigned myself to the fact that
my drive has been corrupted and so I'm on the verge of a format but
I just thought I'd ask in here in case there's a hope of recovering
    the data...

    What a plonker!

Does the Amiga have BACKUP/RESTORE type commands like (wash my mouth
out with soap!) the IBM PC? And are they reliable.

I keep copies of everything. Not strictly a backup, but if my HD went
down, I could restore everything. Once I'd found them again!

There are utilities to do the backup like Quarterback but as I say
I lacked the available floppies to do the backup. I have most stuff on
floppies somewhere but it's all over the place...

Still, if I have to reformat, at least it'll be defragmented ;-)

BTW, anyone want me to system manage their VMS system ? I do cheap
    rates ;-)

Did you try DISKSALV? I've never used it, just heard it works. And I
thought that QB tools had "tools" to recover lost file systems.

Well nothing's recognising the Hard Drive at all. QB tools doesn't see
the hard drive anymore. I guess this is pretty bad news :-(

    Oh well!

I had a Syquest disk go bad on me so that DOS couldn't even read the
partition information etc. I re-partitioned (quick formatted?) my disk
using the ICD utilities that came with my controller, then used the QB
Tools restore lost files. QB Tools found everything after the format
    just fine.

Jamie,

I made up a bootable floppy that would boot then try and mount my hard
disks, so I could then try and repair them. I can let you have a copy
of the floppy, or tell you whats on there as I know you've got the same
hard disk as me!

Too late! The data has since left this mortal coil to join the great
    bit-bucket in the sky ;-)

    Thanks anyway!
