5155.0. "MINI-GENLOCKS, Any good ones?" by ANGLIN::GAINES () Wed Oct 30 1991 11:01

What is a mini-GEN and what can I do with it? Will
it allow me to save good/high quaility images from
my VCR? They seem to be quite reasonable, is this a
good starting point for a rank amature?

Actually the AmiGen goes the other way. It will allow you to overlay
Amiga Graphics on video, and put the combined image to VCR. It is not
high quality as far as image goes, maybe good though.

.1 is correct, except that the base note referred to mini-gen, not
ami-gen. A special edition of AW over a year ago did exhaustive tests of
genlocks available for the Amiga. As I recall, the ami-gen provided less than
stellar quality, while the mini-gen was very good. It was the cheapest high
quality gen lock at the time. I don't know if that's still true today, though.

I use a SuperGen 2000s myself. I don't feel anything less that the
standard SuperGen offers quality that can be considered VERY GOOD.
Amigo Times had a very good(pardon pun) article comparing Genlocks.
They showed all the scope signals, and compared them to a signal
generated by a piece of equipment used in the video industry for just
this purpose. All the low end Genlocks suffered greatly. I will word
it this way. if you want a Genlock strictly for home, and hobby use
the mini-gen will do nicely. If you are looking beyound this it will
fall short of your expectations. I believe the mini-gen comes in at
100.00 over the ami-gen but that 100.00 dollors makes a big difference
in performance. I suggest you find a dealer that has a unit, and see
the results for yourself if possible.

Pardon me if my stupidity shows; didn't .0 ask about CAPTURING
    pictures? Doesn't this require a frame-grabber of some sort? I didn't
know that genlocks did that. Glad to hear it.

I thought I mentioned in .1 that a genlock would not go that way. I'd
suggest the tried and true Digi View, or DCTV.

I use the DIGIVIEW for grabbing a vcr-picture to the amiga.
It works quite nice if think. When I want to mix an
    amiga-screen together with a vcr-picture (camera shot)
    or a part of a movie, I use my midi-gen (PRO-GEN).
The result can be saved on a second vcr. The quality
is not perfect. If you want professional quality,
you have to pay for it...(a lot).

    Henry
