Greetings, This note is a request for advise re updating my A1000 with SCSI interface. The story so far.... My beutifull A1000 has 2mb of memory inside. It has a Hard disk interface which is a 'slap-on-the-side' one. The hard disk interface talks via ST506 to a RD53. The system runs extremely well, however I now am looking to expand it. Due to recently purchasing a new house, the purchase of a new amiga is completly out of the question. Besides I *love* my 1000! I would like to interface a TLZ04 SCSI tape drive to the system, so that I can backup a little easier. Also I believe a VMS backup 'reader' is available so that I can transport stuff home a little easier. Now to the Nubs. I would like some advise on scsi adapters that will...... 1. Allow me to use a tlz04 (I have the apple cable btw). 2. Allow me to plug in a scsi-st506 adapter to preserve my Hard disk investment. 3. Not so important - scsi adapter that will allow memory to be added. If anyone can advise on the above, they will earn my undying gratitude. Regards Stan Gifford. P.S What do you wanna be - a wal a wallaby!

I think the A590 is a good choice, even though it faces backwards on the A1000. It will give an additional 2MB of memory capacity too. It can work with an adaptec based disk (as well as OMTI based disks). MIcrobotics makes a program that will format an adaptec based disk that will work with scsi.device (driver for the A590, A2091 and A3000 imbeded scsi). It is available from their area on BIX. I have connected a bunch of devices to mine and it works just fine! More important on a non-acclerated amiga is that the A590 is DMA and reduces the processor load for doing scsi based I/O. It also has a very good implementation of SCSI direct commands for lots of nice SCSI hacks that are floating around. -SES | |||||

In the same line as .0 I also have an A1000 that I couldn't stand (read afford) to part with. I currently have a Microbotics Starboard II w/2MB memory and an ancient Xebec SCSI controller with a 9720H 20MB drive. The drive sounds like a 1950s air conditioner. LOUD!!! I'd like to upgrade my SCSI attachments to include a bigger drive and a tape backup device but am concerned with the controller and driver compatability. Is my best bet to get the Microbotics SCSI module for the Starboard II which I assume comes with its own driver? What are my options for standalone drives or tapes? Prices? -- Steve |
