5142.1 | Use .DXF Format?? | BELFST::MULLAN | | Thu Oct 24 1991 12:32 | 12 |
| AutoCAD has the ability to output drawings in DXF format - an industry
standard drawing interchange format - which I have used to import
drawings written on another CAD package on a Mac.
If you can import .DXF format drawings, then I will copy them to you or
upload them to a common area if possible.
Now what can I delete from my VAXstation to make room for the
Betterments package again?????

5142.2 | Sounds good I hope it works! | ANGLIN::GAINES | | Thu Oct 24 1991 14:38 | 13 |
| By all means lets upload... I'm fairly certain Draw 2000 plus
supports the file format. I don't have my book here at the office
but I will try to confirm tonight. Does anyone know now, if the
industry standard format is the same standard for D2000?
If not its time for me to look at something else. This will be
great, and exactly what I need. I hope this will work with
d2000, I hope, I hope!
Consider uploading a few parts, I could try them and report
back on my findings.

5142.3 | CAD uploaded | BOUTYE::MULLAN | | Fri Oct 25 1991 08:09 | 15 |
| I have uploaded two drawings to EOT::AMIGA:[UPLOAD] called CAD.DWG and
CAD.DXF
CAD.DWG is an AutoCAD drawing in AutoCAD format and CAD.DXF is the same
drawing in Drawing Interchange Format. The drawing is of a PC, VT, and
printer - no point getting adventurous at this stage until we find out
if it works or not.
Hope this helps, I'll get Betterments installed this afternoon and if
this exercise works, then I can upload the DEC equipment library.
Let me know how you get on.

5142.4 | Will it work? Maybe X-CAD is the Answer! | ANGLIN::GAINES | | Fri Oct 25 1991 12:03 | 45 |
| Ger, I have the Aegis Draw 2000 Plus book in front of me now.
Its says the file format D2000 uses is ASCII. D2000 uses 3 types of
text.
1) integer: Whole number
2) real: number a floating point value of 122.222
3) string: a stream of valid ASCII characters enclosed in quotes.
drawing consist of graphic elements, uses object based approach,
such as lines, arcs, circles, ellipses, text, dimensions etc. D2000
knows what type of element it is utilizing by use of an ID. Each type
of graphic element has a unique ID.
The ID's are:
Polygon 1
circle 2
text 3
Dimension 4
part 5
arc 6
ellipse 7
Well, this stuff just goes on and on... Now that we have this
information, does anyone know if this is a CAD standard in regards to
ASCII file format? Is there a method to import parts from the
betterments package to D2000?
If not I could take a closer look at another cad package I have,
its called Dynamic CAD... I belive it utilizes standard CAD file
formats. My version is a bit buggy though.
Could I solve all my problems by simply buying X-CAD. Will X-Cad
allow me to import DXF files to it? Does X-CAD support compatability
with AUTOCAD files? Does X-CAD support Post-Script outputs as well?
I have a plotter but do like the results I get on the LPS20 in Post
Script format.
Maybe I should go buy ONE of those IBM's, if the Amiga can't deliver
here...

.re -1
I can give a partial answer! There are 2 versions of XCad available,
a low end and a high end ans about 2x the cost.
Regarding the low end version of XCad, I think it's called
XCAD Designer-II these days:
- it does NOT support POSTSCRIPT
- it does NOT import/export any standard file formats
Regarding the high end version of XCad, I think it's called
XCad Professional these days.
- Best to get input from someone else. I "thought" that import/export
to various CAD formats + Postscript were 2 of it's big features.
