I should add something I heard: This only works, if the MMU
is currently totally free, unused. If it is already in use (like in
today's A3000), then the software can't provide VM.

*** controller without hd: 448,- DM; up to 5588,- DM with a 660 MB drive

*** they say so

| I read with interest in a UK mag, a review of Workbench 2.0 (some time ago); in
the list of "rumoured" developments for the next version of the OS, amongst the
high density floppy support etc. was Virtual Memory. Unfortunately, this is all
I can recount, since I think I trashed the magazine when I moved house about 3
months ago... we can but hope :-)

This weekend was a big AMY-show here in Vienna and some of the
Commo reps (technical and marketing) were there.
They let the people ask whatever they wanted to know about the
future and answered very frankly.
Here's what they said about VM:
They're not only thinking about it, but they have done a reasonable
fair amount of the basic work done. I.e. in principle they have
an Amiga-OS with VM. But they have much work to do to make it
compatible to the old programs. And that's the big part of it.
Aside they are going to set up guidelines for developers how to
build a program to work with VM.
The other big thing in the next OS-release are "software-switches"
in the OS for various Grafx output devices.
I.e.: There's a folder on the Workbench where you select your
Graphiccard/Monitor. The program generates generic output and
the OS drives the output to the specified device.
You can compare this with the printer-drivers.
Networking is not one of their main goals, although they're
redefining the SANA as SANA-II. And they're providing support for
the developpers. (BTW: they stated that there's a product for Novell.)
As last thing they said that the two major parts of OS 2.1 are:
Internationalization (i.e. german/french/spanish menues and errors)
AND (much more interesting..)
CROSS-DOS is bundled with the OS !!!!

like the sound of it all - was there any indication of a date for 2.1
meanwhile I hope 2.0 arrives in australia before to long....

They didn't mention an exact date but it's almost ready. We saw
a gamma-release on the show.
Since it's not the big thing it's of course a disk-only upgrade.
Should be out in late winter/early spring.

BTW: For the first time we (Austria) were the first over here
in Europe, who got the new OS. They flew it in by plane just
for the show. They're not sure wether they have enough copies
for the big Amiga show in Cologne.

2.0 was "almost ready" 2 years ago. I say next fall.

| This may have gotten mentioned already, but one restriction I saw about VM
somewhere was that it needec to "own" the MMU. Disk based WB loads, or programs
like enforcer would not be useable with VM.

| I just hope that these VM implementations are transparent to the
user/programmer, and don't make use of the handle/Lock/Unlock scheme
that Windows uses for memory management.
It's not a bad way to layer memory management on top of an OS, but
it really should be done in the OS using the MMU.

| 2.0 was ready to have the public turned loose on it nearly 18 months ago,
and they gave a release date of "Novemeber" at that time. As far as I
can tell, everyone but the 3000 owners are still waiting for 2.0.
On the other hand, 2.0 included rewriting the DOS in C, chasing out a
*bunch* of long-term, you-probably-never-saw-them bugs (thanks to Bill
Hawes and tools like Memoration and Scratcher), and putting in screwy
compatability hacks to keep eurocoder style programs alive. Presumably,
that doesn't need to be redone.
I'd say next fall would be early; summer after seems more likely. After all,
what's the shortest intervale between OS releases from CBM, not counting the
1.0 -> 1.1 upgrade?
