5107.0. "CAD anybody help?" by FRUST::HAMILTON () Tue Oct 08 1991 09:35

I'm looking for a good value in a CAD program. I've been reading the
conference religously [sic?] for several weeks and have seen numerous
old references to XCAD which sounds much too involved and expensive
for my needs. I basically want to be able to work in 2-D and create
objects that are to scale with other objects on the screen. This
would require that units of size (preferably metric) be an attribute
of anything I want to create. To be able to make scale drawings of
things I want to build is one goal that I have, but the capability to
make floor plans would also be a plus, if I could get this in one
    SW-product.

Check out the Progressive Peripherals & Software (PP&S) CAD products.
What follows are the writeups in the Summer, 1991 "AC's Guide/Amiga",
plus my own comments, in a few cases.

     	IntroCAD 49.95
    	User-friendly, object-oriented CAD program. Delivers laser-like
output on dot matrix printers. [Also supports plotters, but NOT
    	PostScript output.]

     	IntroCAD Plus $99.95
Like IntroCAD, but more powerful. Adds layers, hatching, ARexx
support and more drawing tools [and PostScript, I think]. Also
    	has user-definable keyboard equivalents.

     	UltraDesign $199.95
Professional CAD system: Auto-Dimensioning, endless layers, full
library support, user-definable keyboard commands, and menus.
Past-up module for plotting and scaling single or multiple drawings
for output over one or several pages. Easy to use!

I bought IntroCAD a couple of years ago and upgraded to IntroCAD Plus
when it came out. They're both decent products (for occasional use)
and seem to meet your needs.

While I'm at it, here are a few other products, presented in order of
    ascending price.

     	X-CAD Designer by CADVISION $149.95
    	X-CAD Designer is a full-featured, professional, two-dimensional
design and drafting tool. Easy to use and learn, pull down menus,
and a comprehensive tutorial toguide the novice through the early
stages of leanring, while advanced users may configure the system
    	to suit their own needs.

     	Aegis Draw 2000 $279.95
A powerful two-dimensional CAD system. Create structured drawings,
up to 256 layers of information. Unlimited zoom levels, auto-
dimensioning, and the ability to edit any line at any time are just
a few of the features that make this program the solution to most
    	CAD applicaton needs.

     	DynaCADD $995.00
DynaCADD is a 2-D and true 3-D computer-aided design and drafting
software solution that will turn your computer into a sophisticated
and powerful CADD workstation. With electrical, mechanical,
architectural, or civil applications, DynaCADD provides a total
design and drafting solution. DynaCADD revises, designs, and
details drawing in 2-D and true 3-D, reads and writes the industry's
standard file formats. DynaCADD offers an alternative solution to
expensive, difficult-to-use CADD systems and brings mainframe CADD
capabilities to the CADD Professional at a fraction of the cost.
DynaCADD combines an extensive collection of features, uncommonly
fast display speed, and seamless performance. DynaCADD's attention
to ease of use drastically reduces the learning period normally
associated with CADD packages. DynaCADD supports OS version
1.3/2.0, NTSC, PAL/SECAM, ECS Graphic Modes, and Multitasking.
DynaCADD package includes: 68000 and 68020/68030 versions, 10 AGFA
Compugraphic Fonts and four additional CAD fonts, Vector Font/
Hatching Editor -- 14 predefined hatching patterns included,
background plotting. [Sounds like they copied the sales blurb. 8^]
5107.2CAD or structured drawing?TLE::ALIVE::ASHFORTHLord, make me an instrument of thy peaceTue Oct 08 1991 12:3610
Do you really need a CAD-oriented package, or simply a "structured
drawing" program? The latter tend to be less "powerful" but are also
    typically more intuitive.

One example of this type of program is DesignWorks (by New Horizons, I
think). I've seen it selling for $79.95 (Creative Computers). I can't
comment on its capabilities, ease of use, etcetera- maybe someone else
    can.
