5068.0. "Anybody head about DoubleTalk" by AMIGA::RIES (OS/2 = Half an Operating System) Mon Sep 23 1991 17:38
I picked up DiskMaster II the other day and on the disk was some product info
from Progressive Peripherals & Software about their DoubleTalk network system.
I sounds really nice. Does anyone know anything about it? Mail order pricing
seems to be around $399. The following is the blerb from the disk.

DoubleTalk - the easy solution for Amiga networking!
Are you looking for a network system that's compatible, easy to use, and
affordable? DoubleTalk offers you more than any other Amigatm network!
DoubleTalk gives you two network protocols: standard AppleTalktm for
compatibility with Apple MacIntoshtm computers, peripherals, and laser
printers, or the exclusive high-speed DoubleTalk mode for Amiga-only
networks. Installing DoubleTalk couldn't be easier - just insert
DoubleTalk cards into the Amigas you want to network, attach the included
PhoneNet connectors, and plug in standard phone cables to set up a
virtually unlimited variety of networks. An unlimited number of Amigas and
MacIntoshestm with DoubleTalk's network bridge support capability. Adding
or removing network servers and clients is just as simple! Unlike other
networks, DoubleTalk allows any Amiga on the network to share its own files
and resources, in addition to having access to files and resources on the
network. A dedicated server system isn't necessary with DoubleTalk! A
high-speed onboard processor and dual 512 Kbit ROMs ensure fast, efficient
and error-free transfer of data throughout the network, without unnecessary
use of the Amiga's RAM and processor. DoubleTalk's "quiet" multi-tasking
design ensures compatibility without sacrificing performance!
Eliminate the time, expense, and inefficiency of having the same programs
and data filling up hard drives on dozens of machines, and give floppy
machines access to large hard drives through the network. You won't need a
printer for every computer anymore - DoubleTalk's printer server handling
and print job spooling capability make network printer-sharing easier than
ever before. DoubleTalk saves you disk space and desk space!
Every DoubleTalk card comes with Network-Manager, the state of the art in
network management software. Using Network-Manager's simple, intuitive
interface, even complex networks can be configured in a matter of minutes.
You won't have to change your system parameters or modify startup-
sequences. - let DoubleTalk create installation and boot disks for the
Amigas on your network! Set up a user database the way you want it; add
or change passwords at two security levels to keep private programs and
data secure. Restrict access to files on a public, group, or individual
user basis. Set file attributes to make files "invisible", read-only, or
allow full access. Create servers as large or small as you like. Since
any AmigaDOS volume may be set up as a server, Amigas on your DoubleTalk
network can share large RAM disks and special peripherals. DoubleTalk's
unique internal protocol management allows full access and support for a
virtually unlimited number of peripherals, without confusing technical
jargon or complicated setup procedures.
DoubleTalk also comes with other useful software. The NetMail system
allows you to send and read network mail, such as notices, interoffice
memos, or private messages. Just click on the NetMail icons for easy
access to the network mail system! An onscreen network activity indicator
may be activated, and separate quick icons are provided for changing
network speed on the fly and accessing other network facilities. All
network functions are accessible through both the keyboard and the mouse,
to suit every user's preference.
DoubleTalk supports network-distributive software, such as 3-D
Professional's ray tracing software, to use the processing power of all
Amigas on the network to finish time consuming jobs quickly. Processor
intensive tasks which tied machines up for hours can be done in minutes on
a DoubleTalk network!
DoubleTalk comes with plug-in card with extra serial port, phonenet
connector, NetMan software and utilities, and thoroughly illustrated manual
with many network examples. All you'll need to set up a network is enough
standard phone cable for your site. DoubleTalk cards for the Amiga 500 are
also available.
