5051.1 | What exactly is it? | FORTY2::CADWALLADER | da-na-na-na...re-fle-fle-flex! | Tue Sep 17 1991 06:30 | 13 |
| Hi,
Us here in the UK do not have the benefit of the PowerUp program either,
I guess it's because we're all stupid games players here - it must be true, CBM
UK think so :-/. Anyway, that gripe aside, can someone explain exactly what the
PowerUp program is and what benefit you gain. I guess it must be a trade-in
deal, right? If it is worth pursuing, perhaps UK Amigans could start a petition
or such to hassle CBM UK into starting it here too. I actively hassled CBM UK in
a couple of ways for providing a 2.0 Enhancer upgrade for 500s and it seems that
they listened to people such as me after all ... so a PowerUp hassle would be
worth a go too!

| Hi Erik,
JIM CAD* here...
I have the address of CBM UK, I'll post it in here tomorrow so that we
can write and complain (or <flame> ).
I also have the phone no. for CBM UK, I'll post this too...
It *is* worth phoning to ask questions and put views too, last time I
phoned I was put through to one of the dept. managers himself - he did
seem interested in my views and listened to what I wanted to say; that
was about releasing v2.0 for A500s. I phoned up, complained, and sent
a petition from Portsmouth Poly. A couple of weeks later I got a
couple of letters back with the good news :-). I like to think my little
effort had *some* effect! (shines fingernails on shirt)

Nope! All you "trade in" is the front cover of an original manual with the
machine's serial number jotted down on it. You keep the hardware and get
hundreds of dollars off the new machine. Not a bad deal (though I didn't take
advantage of it, *sigh*)
Good luck out there!

| Just the front cover of the manual ??? Great !!!!
Let me just get this straight ... This is to upgrade from any model
Amiga to an Amiga 3000 only right. No chance of upgrading to a A2500
(for those of use who want toasters !!!).
Also what sort of discounts was involved in the Power up program ???
it: Pricies of 3000's normally and the discounts given in the powerup
program.

From the flier and adverts I saw, you could upgrade from almost anything
(Amigas, C64, VIC-20) to a 3000 model (various CPU speeds and disk
capacities).
You could upgrade from any earlier Amiga to a 3000 only. (I think there might
be another plan to upgrade from C64s and VICs to any Amiga as well, with less
savings.)
Savings (at least for "powering up" from an Amiga .5K, 1K or 2K)
were on the order of $1000 to $1500 (US dollars, whatever they're worth).
I think the 3000 prices are from $3000 to $4500, something like that?
I think the amount of savings depended more on the version of the 3000 you
wanted. (This is all from memory, of which my Amiga has more than I .-)
Anybody else with better info?
Basically it was a *good* deal, I hope it comes your way.
Jim

5051.8 | Maybe only to the 500's | HSSTPT::WILSONTL | Lead Trumpet (Read that...LEED!) | Thu Sep 19 1991 09:52 | 4 |
| I believe the current Power-up Program only upgrades earlier C=
machines (C64, C128, VICs, etc.) to A500's. The A3000 program expired
at the end of June. Since I already took advantage of the earlier one,
I haven't looked at the details in the latter.

re .8
Both the A500 and A3000 programs were extended pass June. I'm
not sure if they are still in effect, but they were in effect in
August.

5051.11 | The value of POWER UP is... | CVG::PETTENGILL | mulp | Thu Sep 19 1991 22:19 | 9 |
| typically about $500 on the 3000 and $50 on the 500.
This is based on the price at System Eyes where I've bought on of each.
The standard price of an A500P is $549 and on powerup you get it for $499 under
Powerup.
The standard price of an A3000-25/50 is something like $2750(??) and you get it
for $2250 under Powerup.

5051.12 | Pitiful UK choice :-( | FORTY2::CADWALLADER | Rifle butts to crush you down... | Fri Sep 20 1991 06:57 | 19 |
| RE: -1
What is the difference between your (US) "standard" A500 and the A500P?
In the UK our only A500 is (presently),
512k RAM on-board, ECS Agnus, WB1.3, standard chipset...
Why the P? Is there enhanced hardware or just a different package
of soft? In the UK our packages are called different names solely
on the choice of soft (usually all games that you get); e.g. we
had the "Batman pack", the "Flights of Fantasy (Fancy?)" pack,
the "Screen Gems" pack - all with a standard A500. Now some machines
(most maybe) are being sold with 1Meg but this is still, I believe,
only due to an A501 plugged in.
- JIM CAD*
BTW - we don't have the A2500 here either, just A1500, A2000, A3000.

| re: .12
The A500P comes with some software, 1 MB of memory and a clock. The
smaller machine, which I believe is called the A500C, comes with less
software, 1/2 MB of memory and I don't think it has the clock. Sorry
I don't have the details on what software comes with each package.

The "A500P" comes with the A501 Clock/Memory Expansion card already
installed in the bay underneath. It's also packaged with a few Gold
Disk applications. The "A500C" is a 512KB A500 with a game or three.
