5047.0. "Alternate boot device??" by CSC32::D_RESTIVO () Mon Sep 16 1991 12:41

Greetings,

I just purchased a new Amiga 500 this weekend along with an external
floppy disk drive. The system boots from the internal disk (DF0:). Is
it possible to have the system boot from my external floppy disk (DF1:)?

The reason being is that it's faster and much more quiet than the
internal disk.

Possible but not easy as far as I know. You can buy an internal hardware
thing called the Shuffler (I think) that does this. I suspect it will
void your Commodore warranty - your dealer would know for sure.

Quieter I understand, but faster? Are you sure it is faster?
I thought these things were standardized.

Also, if you are not afraid of manipulating script files, you can
write startup scripts that boot from two floppies at once. This might
save you some bootup time. The joys and challenges of multitasking ;-).

2.0 Kickstart checks all attached floppy drives for a bootable disk, and
will boot from the first one with a bootable disk in it (at least, I
believe it's the first one).

2.0 KS for 2000/500's is supposed to ship in October (or third quarter,
depending on who you listen to), so it might be worth waiting for.

Hi,

I have a small util that allows you to redefine DF0: as the "external"
and DF1: as the "internal" drive. Thing is, I haven't a clue where it
is because I haven't used it for years! It would work fine for most
things, but games which turned off the operating system and used
custom hardware drivers to access the disks would usually consider
DF0: to be internal and DF1: to be external.

Have you tried a *HARDWARE* Boot-Switch??
I build one once and It works fine.
All you have to do is switch the drive-select-lines on one of the
    internal CIA's.
If you don't like to hack around in your computer, you can buy them at
a local store here (in The Netherlands that is.)
If you're inter(r?)ested, I can give you the adress.
    (I'll have to look it up,but that's no problem :-) )
