My phone rang. The secretary said "Jeff Stilley, Vice President Sales, Commodore Business Machines would like to speak to you". I mumble... "ok". Mr. Stilly immediately launched into a discussion about how Commodore intended to support the Amiga in the United States, not knowing that I had already changed my mind based on _their_ recent actions. I was assured over the phone by Mr. Stilley that Commodore was here to stay in the United States. Further, 2.04 will ship to Amiga 500/2000 in ROM and that the PowerUp program has had an incrediable impact on sales and that they were overwhelmed by orders. He added that all back orders will be filled very shortly. Mr. Stilley asked me to relay to all that Commodore Business Machines _understands_ and _needs/appreciates_ the 4,000,000 (his number!) Amiga Users. He also said that the advocates of the Amiga is what has made Amiga the machine it is today. He hoped that we all could continue carrying the flame for the Amiga, as every little bit helps. He did agree with me when I said that "communication" would have prevented a lot of the doom and gloom postings that occurred. He said he hoped to address that shortly. I did not think to ask about ROMs for the A3000. :-( I did bend his ear a bit folks. I told him about my Ninetendo Power Up program idea. I told him about my wish for more aggressive 'high end' advertising. I told him some of the things I have always wanted to tell someone at Commodore. The only thing that would have been better is if Jim Dionne or Irving Gould himself had called me! The one thing he said that excited me was "If you thought the power up program was good... " hinting at a possible new campaign that would really blow us all away. Anyway, I feel reassured about Commodore's stand in the U.S marketplace. I am extremely impressed that someone from Commodore thought enough of me to call me to re-assure me that indeed things were ok. His words "Jim Dionne did not move to the United States to close Commodore Business Machines..." :-) Between his discussion with me and my continued discussions with CATS folks, I am convinced that the Amiga is what Commodore is placing their future on. I am further convinced that they intend to be a strong market pressence in the United States. Folks, my clouds are now completely gone! I have got to say to those doubters out there. I was _NOT_ threatened in any way by _anyone_ from Commodore. Every conversation I had with Commodore was professional and held with the highest regard. Watch out Commodore/Amiga bashers. I am bbaaaccckkk.. with sword in hand! << I now return you back to your regular CDTV / CD-I bashing >> -mark= --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mark D. Jeff Stilley, the *VICE PRESIDENT* of Commodore U.S. Sales called me too, about two (maybe three) weeks ago! I've been so busy with school I forgot to post. I had just come back from a canoe trip in the Boundry Waters with my fiancee and had a phone message that I was supposed to call the Vice President of Commodore about a posting I'd made to a bulletin board. I was stunned, it's not every day that corporate presidents of *any* company call me. Naturally, I assumed that the message referred to was an Internet posting I'd made right after Commodore reassigned all their Unix people. I started the thread: "A moment of silence for our fallen friends at Commodore" (yes I admit it). So I'm thinking, he's probably not calling me to set up a job interview. Mr. Stilley was out of the country the first time I tried to call him. I finally got ahold of him Tuesday(?) of the next week. Mr. Stilley has just taken over the position of Vice President of Sales for Commodore in the U.S. Formerly, he worked for two other *LARGE* vendors of another brand of personals (is it legal to quote names on the NET?). Mr. Stilley is comitted to the Amiga and said that the other computers he had sold, "were boring". All right, so what did Jeff Stilley call about anyway??? 1) Mr. Stilley basicly called to quell rumors that Unix would not be supported by Commodore, or that the 2.0 upgrade of Unix wouldn't ship. Apparently Commodore has a lot of eggs in the Unix basket. Over 120 applications had been ported to Unix at the time we talked. 2) Mr. Stilley explained that the reassignment of the Unix team was just that. Commodore basicly felt that the team members who were reassigned could be put to better use elsewhere as the 2.0 version of Unix is about to ship. 3) Commodore's total layoffs this year were less than 6% of the company's total workforce. Most other vendors in the data processing field had much larger layoffs this year. 4) Commodore posted a $48.6 Million profit this year (This is all from memory, I don't remember if this was for the last fiscal quarter or the entire fiscal year), up from the same time period last year, while almost all other vendors reported lower sales over the same time period last year. 5) Finally, he said that sales of CDTV were doing great. Well folks, I have to admit, I was already impressed that people like Dave Hanie, Andy Finkel, Bryan Nesbit, and the rest of "The Crew That Never Rests" took time out of their busy schedule to post, but I have to say, a phone call from the Vice President of Sales, now that's what I call customer support!!! What can we learn from all this? Well, I think Mark Manes origional posting echoed some of what Mr. Stilley and I talked about, and that is that you shouldn't believe everything you read, especially unconfirmed rumors. I was unsure for a while there if I'd made a good choice in computers, but now, I'm once again a pround owner of an A3000. Long live the Amiga!!! And death to single tasking operating systems!!! --George -- George L.
