| Your phone number is correct. I have found it best to call after 4:00
(Californina time). I use DECnet and X-windows (and Motif :-) on my
AmigaDOS, so feel free to email me if you think I can help. It also works
with TCP/IP, SLIP (I believe), and SANA. You can run clients and servers
on your local system without networking, provided you have the memory and
processing power.
BTW -- If you are thinking of using X-windows over a modem, I have heard it is
not useful at baud rates below 9600 baud. It's also pretty expensize $$. The
kit takes about 10 meg of disk space - 14 meg if you add the 100dpi fonts. You
should also know that I have never been able to get ASYNC DECnet to work over
a modem (even though its suppose to work). It also does NOT come with XTERM.
If your goal is just networking, the DECnet may be all you need. It allows
multiple terminal sessions over your "link", file transfer and directories,
and now has email. Given that AmigaDOS also provides for using the
"SAY" command or sound samples (to "call out" to the remote user), it's
pretty complete. The X-windows won't really buy you additional functionality
and it's a pretty heafty package in terms of resources.
|
| Keith, I never had any trouble using Asynch DECnet through the serial
port. I believe I was using a normal "Scholar" modem and just dialed
into a local router setup for Asynch. I ran like this for quite a while,
until I got the ethernet board.
2400 baud is very painful, and not practical for X-windows (but it
does work). 9600 would be the way to go.

GfxBase, Inc and S&B Software, Inc are pleased to announce the
impending availability of a MOTIF Window Manager and MOTIF programmer's
toolkit for AmigaDOS.
The Motif Window Manager runs in conjunction with the GfxBase X Server.
The programs produced by the toolkit can be used over a TCP/IP or
Decnet to other X servers on the network or displayed on GfxBase AmigaDOS
X Server with or without a network connection.
Now you can use your Amiga and SAS C Compiler to produce
platform-independant C code for one of the industry's most popular Graphic
User Interfaces.
Details follow.

Product Description:
OSF/Motif Programmer's Toolkit for Amiga is an implementation of the
Motif toolkit by the Open Software Foundation. Used in conjunction with the
X Window System Programmer's Toolkit for Amiga, it allows the development,
testing and execution of Motif programs under the native AmigaDOS operating
system.
The toolkit consists of Motif include files and libraries adapted to
allow development of Amiga clients using the SAS C compiler.
The UIL User Interface Language compiler, a Motif development tool,
and numerous Motif source code examples are included.
These programs run on the Amiga personal computer and can communicate
with either local displays through "X Window for the Amiga" X server
or remote displays on other X Window based servers through a network.
Programs developed with this product are almost completely source-code
compatible with Motif programs on other platforms and operating systems,
including Sun, DEC (VMS and Ultrix), HP, and IBM.
The Motif toolkit produces X Window applications that, when run under
the MWM window manager(included), provide an industry-standard graphic user
interface. The behavior of this interface is very similar to Presentation
Manager; actually it consists of a superset of PM and Microsoft Windows
behaviors. Because of its ease-of-use and consistancy, Motif is fast
becoming one of the industry standards in graphic user interfaces (GUIs).
Motif Programmer's Toolkit for Amiga Contents:
Motif release 1.1.2 include files
Motif release 1.1.2 object code libraries
Motif Window Manager (MWM) binary

| Dale Luck faxed me back with details of his distributor in the UK.
They are the Amiga Centre Scotland, 031 557 4242. And a very useful
bunch of guys they appear to be. Commodore UK never mentioned them.
However, their opinion of Commodore UK and my opinion of Commodore UK
coincide.
The only downer is the price they are charging for the software: 399
This compares with 225 ($395) that Dale claims he can sell it to me
for. Though I guess, once you add on postage and packing, duty and VAT,
it should come pretty close to 399.
They also have TSSNET; another piece of software none of the Commodore
recognised distributors seemed to have heard about.
