Hmmmm, It seems to me that Digital is kinda ignoring a possible cash flow source. For years now, there have been online services that have raked in a good amount of money from computer owners. Now Digital has accessable networks all over the world, why is it that they negected this market? (or have they) One excuse that comercial networks use for hiking rates is that tymnet or one of the other long-distance service companies have raised their rates. Digital (although tymnet is available) has a good # of local sites that could provide dial-in for those that live nearby a plant. They already have the equipment and software, surely they could provide a competative price to compuserve or PC-link? Ed

it could be that Digital likes to use it's network for business :-) We sell the parts for others to put together commercial networks, they probably wouldn't be too thrilled with the idea of buying the parts from the competition. Actually there is a sort of bbs, DSIN. It's a system for customers to dial into for support, fixes, etc. I believe it's a service you can buy, rather than the commercial bbs per hour charge. Of course, you could consider the EASYNET as a large bbs, with lots of interesting conferences. The catch is that you must be a DEC employee to access it. Dave |
