4984.0. "bad block in bitmap?" by FSCORE::KAYE (where's my Kama Sutra pop-up book for zero-g) Thu Aug 22 1991 12:34

I have an RD53 (70MB) drive that i recently reconfigured and now it is
giving me trouble. It is my main (boot) drive and it boots fine, but
as soon as i open it i get the 'R/W error on HD0' reqestor.
I ran QuarterBack Tools on it prior to loading any data and it mapped
out 8 bad blocks. When i run it now i get 'bitmap corrupted - fixing',
but i have to keep clicking this until i get 'bitmap error - OK'. It
seems i have a bad block in the bitmap. I have it configured as cyl
2-4 as OFS (to boot) and cyl 5-1023 as FFS. To move the bitmap i guess
i have to change my partition sizes so it will reallocate the bitmap
position. Am i on the right track?

4984.1is my reasoning correct?FSCORE::KAYEwhere's my Kama Sutra pop-up book for zero-gMon Aug 26 1991 14:088
Nobody going to help....

I am under the impression that the bitmap is placed in the centre of
the partition, so if i change my partition size, the bitmap will move
and i should be able to pick a partition size that won't have the bad
block in my bitmap and i can map it out of service properly??

4984.2Part it a bit mor in the centre!SDOGUS::WILLIAMSTOPGUNMon Aug 26 1991 14:2210
    Mark,
    Yes you are correct, the bit-map is kept in the center of the
    partition. THere are some problems reported with partitions which are
    even in size. I think these were only in V1.3 and lower (fixed in 2.0)
    but I can't remember exactly. Yes you can change the partition size
    and get around the problem (if you are lucky).]

    Hope this helps.

4984.3I always have Bitmap Errors on SyquestRIPPLE::LUKE_TETerry Luke SLO (Utah)Mon Aug 26 1991 17:2218
    I have a Sysquest 44MB removable and everytime I run QB Tools, the very
    last thing I see before it finishes is "Bitmap Incorrect -
    Restructuring" (or something like that). It happens every time I
    search for bad files on all of my cartridges. I have only one
    partition per cartridge. I've always wondered what that meant, but it
    says it fixes it so I've been content.

    However, I have had a lot a read/write errors on my Sysquest. My
    original cartridge wouldn't even spin up after 6 months of use. It
    starts to spin up, makes a terrible noise then spins back down. Often,
    an appication will try to read the disk and come up with a read/write
    error, but QB Tools is unable to find any error when searching for bad
    blocks. I've been a little disenchanted with the Sysquest because of
    this lack of reliability. Can any of this have anything to do with the
    bitmap corruption or the single partition with WB1.3?

This makes sense. The BITMAP records the state of allocation in the partition.
If QB Tools modifies the file system, the current picture the bitmap has will
be invalid.
