4983.0. "Adspeed: What a disaster !" by VIVIAN::D_VISTUER () Thu Aug 22 1991 10:05

    Gents,
I recently brought an Adspeed and installed it in my rev 6
A500. My configuration also consists of an A590 with 2Mb and a 1.3
    	workbench.
The speed increase was nice. However, my machine has become
EXTREMLEY unreliable, and usually crashes whilst running software
I know works perfectly well under the original 68000 @ 7Mhz.
Before I go any further, my A590 has a Quantum 40Mb disk
    	with 64kb on board cache.
Anyway continuing with my problem, it seems that if I try
to run literally any program, Sculpt, ARTM, DiskSpeed, etc, the
machine will guru or hang with 00000004 or 00000003 and sometimes
    	0000000F.
To complicate matters, I have setup the card to boot up
in 7Mhz mode and yet after several coldboots (power cycling) the
card seems to boot up in 14Mhz mode imtermittently.
Running the Adspeed program to change the speed of the card
sometimes comes up at "NO ADSPEED" found.
Loading Battle of Britain, causes the machine to hang if
    	loaded from the harddrive.
The reliability of my machine is so dire that I can
guarantee it wil crash within 1 minute of normal use following
    	a coldboot.
Even in 7mhz mode the machine is unreliable. The manual
suggests that you can add the line "ADSPEED ON" to your startup
to bootup in 14Mhz mode. If I do that the machine does'nt even
manage to finish the startup-sequence before it gurus. As the
manual states, there are very few programs that don't like adspeed,
well I seem to have found ALL of them !.

Therefore could someone with an idea of whats happening
let me know before I demmand my money back ?.

    	Thanks.

    		Dave.

4983.1power supplySTAR::GUINEAUbut what was the question?Thu Aug 22 1991 10:316
Are you powering all this off the A500?

A500 power supplies are not all that powerfull. You may need a better supply
or an external one for the peripherals.

I have an ADSpeed installed in my A2000 and I have had very few
incompatibilities. The only problem that I have had is with Missile_Cmd
(the shareware game), which hangs the machine for some odd reason.

However, I have had no commercial game or productivity software that did
not run with it. Here are some ideas:

	1) You got a bad unit
	2) Maybe it's not seated properly
	3) Maybe there is some incompatibility with your hard drive

I would definitely call the company and get their input.

4983.3I think: therefore I want a replacementVIVIAN::D_VISTUERThu Aug 22 1991 19:1816
I called the retailer, Power Computing, and spoke to their techy. He
reckons the unit was not seated correctly. He suggested I reseat the
unit and try the software all over again (what a Chore !).
Anyway I reseated it as best I could and it still has problems so
I am sending back the unit tomorrow for a fully tested one. Lets hope I
    have better luck this time.
BTW one thing I noticed about the unit was that whoever or whatever
soldered the chips to the board, must of been very generous with the
flux !, and some of the pins show signs of solder i.e. the A-B and C-D
    jumpers... I wonder why ???.
Anyway thanks for your input it is much appreciated.

    Thanks.

    	Dave.
