| First of all, I'm a beginner at this, so please bear with me! Could
someone please tell me how to load these images so I could see them?
Throughout this conference, I've read notes from different people
that all sound similar to this one. I'd like the opportunity to see
some of these things for myself, especially the image of Hurricane
Bob! Sorry to have to hit you with this, but it's been driving me
crazy trying to figure out what everyone's been talking about!!!

| Mike,
I, like you, used to be confused about all this stuff, until one day a
kind person gave me a disk with some utilities on it, and a sheet of
paper explaining what to do with them.
I will gladly copy you this disk and the sheet of paper, if you like. I
don't know where NEST:: is so it may take a little while to get there
by snail mail.
Mail me if you are interested.
By the way, unless you can get your amy in the office, you will need a
Modem, or access to someone elses!
Regards,
Stuart

4970.5 | | STAR::GUINEAU | but what was the question? | Wed Aug 21 1991 10:20 | 11 |
| A while back I digitized a map of the USA from a picture, then carefully
traced a clean outline in DPAINT.
The result is something that was used for a company logo (a friends company)
but could also be used as a DPAINT stencil to overlay on Paul's nice
satellite images.
I haven't tried this on any yet, but if there is interest, I'll upload
the USA maps...

4970.6 | Info on the Equipment | VERGA::MACDONALD | Home of Digital Realtime Pubs | Thu Aug 22 1991 11:16 | 34 |
| Here's the equipment necessary to get these images direct from the
satellites:
o Amiga computer (2 Mbytes at least)
o Advanced Electronic Applications (AEA) AVT interface
(AVT is the product name, but is derived from the acronym
for "Amiga Video Terminal")
o Overview Systems "Overview" option board for the AVT
o A "police/fire scanner" capable of receiving between 137 and 138 MHz
NBFM (for example the Radio Shack PRO-2006 or other less expensive
Radio Shack receivers).
o An antenna, preferrably a circularly polarized multi-element beam
with azimuth and elevation motors (although a home-brew "top hat"
will work pretty well, as described in the Overview manual).
The software that comes with the AEA is called AVT Master. It is
produced by the same folks who brought you HAM-E and CLICKFAX. The
software upgrades are always free. The current version is 3.08i and is
bug-free.
The Overview board is only needed ($120 option) if you plan to copy the
APT (automatic picture transmission) satellites on the 137 MHz band.
Without it you can still copy the newswire photos transmitted on SWL,
weather FAX and even retransmissions of the GOES geosynch weather
satellite. Also, the basic system will demod 55 different modes of b&w
and color slow scan TV.
The Amiga is a superior platform for this type of amateur video
intercepts. Black Belt Systems is working on a major upgrade to the
software to support 256-level grey scale when used with their HAM-E
board - although 16-level grey scale suits me just fine.
The AVT is available from HRO (Ham Radio Outlet) in Salem, NH.
