4965.0. "Amiga not detecting disk in Df0:" by BELFST::MCCLINTOCK (Peter) Fri Aug 16 1991 08:02

A friends Amiga is not detecting the presence of a disk inserted into
    DF0:

When the system is switched on the usual pic of the hand holding the
disk comes on the screen but when the disk is inserted there is no
flicker of the disk light and no sound of the disk being read.

Any ideas on how I should instruct (by phone) my friend to track down
    the problem (& solution)?

Try leaving the disk in the floppy drive while powering up to see if it finds
it.

Try re-seating the disk drive cable. I had this happen to me when I
installed an inboard, and must not have plugged the cable in all the
    way or somethin'

Try leaving the disk in the floppy drive while powering up to see if it finds
 it.

Alternately, do a warm reboot (Ctrl-Amiga-Amiga) after inserting the
    floppy.

Try something simple; do an INSTALL DF0: to make sure there is a boot block
on the disk.

The amiga doesn't even spin the disk to look if there is a boot block.
Many disks that have boot blocks have already been tried so I don't
think that the problem lies here.

4965.7Not physically connect or knackered!FORTY2::CADWALLADERthe grownups are nearly here...Fri Aug 16 1991 13:3916
It's either that the cable has become loose like was said, so that
the disk motor signals etc.. are just not getting through ... or ...
something has gone Ping! i.e. the motor is blown, the read/write
arm is disconnected somehow (depends which type of movement method
used), and it's just plain knackered. If your machine is out of
warranty then best to open it and check the cable.... if not out
of warranty you could try the favourite method of disconnecting all
things, picking the AMIGA about 6" above a flat solid surface and
dropping it. This might cause a loose connection to whap back in place.
I had to do this with an old AMIGA I had when the Agnus kept getting
loose and the machine would just give a green screen & Guru at power-up.
Up to you whether you try it though - you might knackered something
	else!
