4936.0. "Syncronous SCSI setting?" by PAMSRC::63643::BARRETT (Keith meister, making notes) Tue Jul 30 1991 22:25

    Does anyone one if it is a good or bad to enable the "syncronous"
    setting on the 3000 SCSI controller when using Quantum drives? What's
    it suppose to do?

4936.1enable sync give better speedARRODS::GOLDSTEINSteve G DTN: 847-5416/5455Wed Jul 31 1991 05:005

    	A friend has the sync mode enabled on his A3000 and it speeds up
    the system quite a bit.

Synchronous is germane to SCSI.

It's one of two possible data transfer methods, the other being asynchronous
(although if you knew the underlying technical details, you'ld
think the
named were reversed!)

In any case, asynchronous transfer is limited to typically about 1.5MB/s,
except on some newer devices and newer interface chips, which may get
upwards of 4MB/s (but then most new devices utilize synchronous)

Synchronous data transfer is limited to about 5MB/s

By the way, with SCSI-2 and new chips (just starting to become available),
data transfer can be upwards of 40MB/s!

    I have 2 QUANTUM drives on my 3000 (the 100 and 200 meg ones). Is
    there any "risk" in enabling the synchronous setting?

I wouldn't say there is a risk, although I know there were some bugs in the
A3000 SCSI (and the A2091) that new ROMS were issued for. Check with your
service center for the latest.

Try this:

	backup your data (this should be tried often :-) )
	run diskspeed
	enable synchronous
	run diskspeed

You should be happy with the results...

4936.6Seems to workPAMSRC::63653::BARRETTKeith meister, making notesWed Jul 31 1991 11:148
It seems to work well. Visually, it's much faster (icons appear quicker, etc).
Diskspeed reports that it is faster, but the numbers don't suggest anything
incredible.

Thanks! I'll think I'll keep using it this way unless I discover a problem.

    How do you enable the synchronus setting ???
