4898.0. "MED V3.10: Help! ... it won't play" by SAC::JEPSON (Eschew Obfuscation) Mon Jul 15 1991 05:18

    I'm a new Amiga-user (A500, 1Meg). I've discovered Fish disks and
    have downloaded MED 3.10 from FF483.

    When run from the Workbench(1.3.2) I get all the icons and the
    player works but ...

    ... however I try and run MED itself it gurus moaning about not
    being able to connect to the Audio channel or something.

    Does MED require some hardware I don't have?

    Has anyone solved this one?

    MED 3.10 doesn't need any hardware.
4898.2Try MED 3.00 instead AMIGA::RIESOS/2 = Half an Operating SystemMon Jul 15 1991 18:033
MED 3.10 seems a bit flakey to me. It also doesn't have some of the features
of 3.00, so I am still using 3.00. I can also be cound on one of the Fish
Disks.

    Mine starts up, but after running a short time, locks up the machine.
    Is this a consequence of running on an '020 or is it my set up in MED?

4898.431 with 030 works fine!UFHIS::SFISCHERTue Jul 16 1991 03:2311
    I don't think it has to do with the 020. I got an upgraded 2630, and
    MED 3.1 works perfectly! (MED3.0 always had problems with the
    'equalizer').
    .0, do you have any task using the Audio channels in your
    Startup-Sequence??

    .?, What's in Med30, that is not in MED3.1??I didn't find anything!

4898.5AUDIO.DEVICE ?? Where is it?SAC::JEPSONEschew ObfuscationWed Jul 17 1991 05:0622

    I managed to wrest my son away from the screen last night long enough
    to have another go at kicking-off MED 3.10. This time I paid more
    attention to the red message !!!

    It is looking for AUDIO.DEVICE somewhere (presumably in DEVS/) and then
    proffers the opinion my channels maybe busy with another process. I
    cannot find this file in the disc or anywhere on my Workbench1.3.2 or
    Extras1.3. Anyone understand the problem and/or (preferably) explain
    where I get AUDIO.DEVICE from ?

    I've got hold of MED 3.0 but not had time to copy it to 3" floppy yet
    and try running that, however, there's no sign of an audio.device file
    lurking on the disc anywhere.

    Many thanks for the response so far ... I've only had my A500(1Mb) 4
    weeks so I'm sure you will be hearing from me again!!

    Cheers!

    I think, (maybe not true!) that the audio.device is in ROM, it's not
    in DEVS/ .

4898.7Behind the Workbench ScreenBOUTYE::MULLANWed Jul 17 1991 06:4116
    I had the same problem starting MED 3.0 and spent several frustrating
    hours disconnecting everything after the message "UNABLE TO START MED
    - AUDIO CHANNELS IN USE".

    I eventually figured it out. Start MED and let the error message
    display and wait for the main workbench screen to come back. Then
    using MB1 (clicked on the menu bar) pull the workbench screen down
    to the bottom of the display -
    you'll find MED lurking behind it and it should work OK from there.

    I've had this problem with several other "PD" programs as well.

    Hope this helps,

    Gerry.

    Just FWIW; I don't have any experience with MED, but if it like most
    other programs that open custom screens, you can also push the
    Workbench screen to the back with the gadget on the menu bar or with
    the left-Amiga/M key combination. If the custom screen doesn't have a
    title bar gadget (or a pull-down menu or hot-key combination) to get
    you back to the Workbench screen, the left-Amiga/N key combination will
    do the trick (with most programs). There's also several screen-shuffling
    programs out in the PD (ScreenX, etc.).

4898.9Yes, a shy screen (a real wimp?)SAC::JEPSONEschew ObfuscationFri Jul 19 1991 12:4412

    Success !!

    Thanks all. The MED screen was indeed extremely shy and it had snuck
    off and hidden itself behind the workbench screen.

    All I've got to ddo now is learn how to use it ... I've never seen so
    many gadgets !!!
