4867.0. "Need a good Editor" by KAHUNA::SUMNER () Mon Jul 01 1991 16:33

    Does anyone know of a good text editor? I'm using AmigaFox right
    now and not satisfied with it. Is there anything likd SEDT for
    the Amiga? I don't need anything like Word Perfect, I just need
    a good editor to do some Arexx programing.

    Thanks,
    ~Ray

	There's a nice little editor on FF297 named JED. It's base on EMACS,
but it is much smaller and a little more user friendly. It's especially nice
if your system is floppy based because you can delete ED and EDIT and install
JED in less space.

    Personally, I use DME (Matt Dillon's editor). Its fast, full featured,
    etc. I also use the DME config file that makes the keypad act EDTish.
    I preferred this to SEDT.

     Although I haven't made a full comparison, I like QED, available on
     the Fish disks.

    jop!Must agree with -.??! DME is one of the best Editors I know!You can
    programm every key with every function you need, using DME's
    programming language! Theoricaly, you can programm F1 to make a backup
    of the file, exchange a word with another, save the file again, and
    bring the ARP file requester for loading a new doc!!

    If you want a programmers editor, that's the one you need!!

    so long,

     I guess I was wrong in .5. QED is not on the Fish disks. I don't
     recall where I got it, an announcement in here or from AB20 ftpmail, but
     I uploaded the latest version I have to TAPE::AMIGA:[UPLOAD]QED105.LZH
                                             TAPE::AMIGA:[UPLOAD]QED105.README

     I'll put a copy of the readme file in the old QED note too.

	I use mg3a, which is an emacs variant available on the net here
somewhere. It's very tailorable, and has a good AREXX interface. As an
example, I wish it provided a built in form of crash recovery (e.g. journalling,
auto-save, etc.). I was able to add this, though, with an AREXX routine that
gets run from dcron every five minutes and cause the editor to save all modified
buffers.

...if you are looking for sEDT styled editors this could not be of interest
to you ... but you can also consider steVIe (simply try this editor for
vi enthusiasts) that's a 90% compatible AMIGA porting of the U**X's
vi editor.
