4865.0. "Adding additional memory to a 3000" by XSNAKE::WILSONTL (Lead Trumpet (Read that...LEED!)) Sat Jun 29 1991 18:03

I took advantage of the PowerUp program and got all the machine I could
afford: the 3000/16. It comes with one meg each of CHIP and FAST
memory. I had to buy the Multiscan monitor elsewhere because CBM seems
to be heavily backordered on 1950's.

Immediately, the sales person wanted me to buy more memory and wouldn't
I like to buy the 1M x 4 Statis ZIPs because I could get more memory in
the machine. The 1x4s cost $42.95 each and it requires 8 to install.
I understood the limitation on memory and the fact that AmigaDos 2.x
loads in fast memory until they get it in ROM, so I said that I would
have to buy the 256kx4 chips and live with it. Give me one more meg!

The tech moves my existing fast memory to chip and puts in 256kx4 ZIPS
in fast, giving me 2M of chip and 1M of fast. I didn't realize this
until I got it home and powered it up. I know some will disagree, but I
can live with 1M of chip. FAST RAM is what is so critical and is so
    short in a new 3000/16.

What was implied was I wanted another Meg of fast RAM. Am I crazy for
assuming they should have known this? Especially after they ranted on
about it needing more fast memory?

Let this be a warning to those of you who are still contemplating
buying a 3000. If you want it fast, tell them.

This isn't a flame. I'm saving that for the dealer.

Tony (who got his machine at Ampex Systems, Inc in Atlanta)

Re: .0

I'm not sure, but don't yell at the dealer yet.

I seem to remember something something about before you can start adding
fast memory to the ZIP sockets, you have to make the existing 1 meg
of fast ram into chip ram. In other words, before adding any additional
fast ram to the 3000, you have to go to 2 meg of chip RAM.

Can someone who paid my attention than me verify/deny this?

You REALLY need that fast mem in the 3000.

I've got 2Meg in chip and 1Meg in the DIP sockets - because of
kickstart this leaves me with only 1/2 FAST which after loading
Workbench and all my custom programs leaves me with about 6K FAST.

Unfortunately what happens then is that every other program loads into
CHIP memory which because of bus conflicts with the agnus makes my
brand new A3000/25 run at about 2.54 times the speed of a 500!!!

I have had the 4Meg SCRAM on order for about a month now and it's due
    'real soon now'.

    RE .0&.1

From what I understand you cannot mix the 4Meg and 1Meg zimms. I assume
that this means that you CAN mix the 1Megs zimms and the 1Meg of DIP
chips but NOT the 4Meg ZIMMs and the 1Meg DIP chips.

Now that you're all confused does anyone else know the real story?

    Shaun.

True, you can' mix 1M and 256K chips because of the addressing scheme.

The book that accompanies the 3000 says that one of the options is to
leave the existing fast (DIP) memory in place and install a set of ZIPs
in bank one. That is what I expected. Especially since the premise
for selling me the extra memory in the first place was that fast memory
was consumed by the OS and I wouldn't be able to run many applications.

My fast Memory was down to 230 _bytes_ at one time (shortly before it
    hung up).

I took it back to the dealer. After reading him the book, he realized
that the requirement to move the existing fast to chip before
installing zips applies ONLY to the 1M x 4 zips, not the 256kx4's.

He apologized and installed 1 M into bank 1.
