I found this on a local user group board called CA-AUG. It is a very
impressive list of just how much software CDTV has coming out for it. Off the
subject for a second, I'd like to finally get somebody to remark on the
subject of using the newly "discovered" video mode that programs like Macro
Paint are now using. This new mode, done via a few software tricks, allows
4096 *actual* colors on a 704x440 screen. With a little shading you could get
a heck of a lot of colors out of this. Anyway, I'd like to hear remarks on how
this new mode relates to CDTV (is anybody using it, etc). Remember that this
is a new mode that will work on any Amiga with no hardware extras.

| I browsed through the CDTV Gardening "title" at my local computer
store the other day. It was OK but not as impressive as I had hoped. I
had expected animated video of some famous gardens and gardening techniques,
but none of that - mostly textual reference from index or contents page and
still pictures - very similar to the Grolier encyclop�dia. Still, it was very
detailed and factual - so I guess it depends on what you are really looking
for.

This title might be too early to have such a feature. Commodore just
announced/standardized how to do full motion video under CDTV in the
last two or three months.
The problem is that CD/ROMs are too slow to provide real-time video data.
The technique that Commodore is pushing for CDTV is to do 15 frames per
second HAM image animation covering 1/3 of the screen. Evidently,
the CD/ROM in CDTV is just fast enough to handle this without resorting
to any data compression. (Well, personally, I've always considered HAM
to be a compression of 12 bitplane deep images to 6 bitplanes.)
Evidently, the above HAM animation technique is one of the things that
works on a CDTV but doesn't work on an Amiga equipped with a run of the
mill SCSI CD/ROM drive. The CDTV ROM drive is faster than normal
CD/ROM drives. The CDTV drive also isn't a SCSI device, by the way.
I don't know if it being a non-SCSI device somehow allows for some faster
drive access or what.
The announced, but not available, CDTV add on for normal Amigas will
be able to do such CDTV tricks.
