4847.0. "What's On TAPE:: ?????" by ELWOOD::PETERS () Mon Jun 24 1991 14:13

    	I just spent about a hour trying to move files from
    tape::amiga:[upload] into the TAPE::amiga:[amiga...] directories. I
    didn't have much luck. I could not figure out what the files are. I'll
    bet nobody else knows either.

    	So, What can we do ?????

    I suggest that each archive ( arc,zoo,lzh,wrp,shar, ... ) file has a
    file ( .txt or .read_me ) that describes it. In the future, files
    without description files will be DELETED. I have no way of telling
    how long a file has been in the [upload] directory.

    	I'm not going to start this policy for a little while. So, get your
    ideas and comments in NOW.

4847.1New Upload to Tape?SHARE::DOYLEMon Jun 24 1991 15:335
    Steve, What about the "Uploaded to Tape" note?
    Any stuff I upload I usually list there...

4847.2Create a .TXT file?DECWET::DAVISyou always get what you deserveMon Jun 24 1991 21:355
    I usually use the "Uploaded to TAPE" note also, but will start
    uploading a .TXT containing the same information I place in the
    notesfile.

    I'd vote for the accompanying .txt file with the archive. I don't always
    have the conference handy when I'm poking around the tape:: directories
    and a .txt file would be useful. Better yet, maybe someone should convince
    VMS development to implement the equivalent of filenotes ;-) (How many
    times I've done a dir and wished there was a comment field with each file)

4847.4modules on Tape ?TRUCKS::BUSSINK_EHoney, I iconified the kids !Tue Jun 25 1991 04:218
    I've got some good ST-modules made by some friends, could I upload them
    on Tape or is it space wasting

    						Erik

    PS - I'll add and .txt file from now on !
    PPS - ST = SoundTracker and not another computer ! :-)
    PPPS - the files are made on ST,NoiseTracker and MED.
4847.5Keep it comming ...ELWOOD::PETERSTue Jun 25 1991 10:278

    	I don't want this note stop anyone from uploading. If there is a
    .TXT I'll move the data and it's safe. If not, I'll make a best guess to
    save as much data as possible.

re: .-1

Yes, please upload ANY AND ALL soundtracker/MED tunes you have. I urge anyone
else who has some to place then in the archive as well. I really enjoy these
tunes and would like to collect as many as possible.

Steve, could we perhaps create a specific directory on TAPE: for Soundtracker
tunes? I know there is one for DMCS already.

    	I can set-up a directory. How about

    		[amiga.music.soundtracker]
    		[amiga.music.DMCS]

    something like this	 [amiga.music.modules]
    will be more appropriate, due to the fact that those modules are not
    only coming from soundtracker.

Off the wall suggestion...

Duplicate the [AMIGA...] directory hierarchy in the upload area so people
can put the files where they belong. I know I'd rather just watch the areas
I'm interested in anyhow.

Steve, either a .SOUNDTRACKER or .MODULES directory is fine. Maybe there
should also be a .SONIX as well for completness.

I still like having the upload directory to see what new rather than having
to search the whole tree to see whats new. I do think that we should include
.txt or .readme files whenever we upload stuff to that Steve (or anyone else
for that matter) can figure out what the stuff is without having to download
it, or poke into the .LZH (etc) files. Not everything that ends up on TAPE
gets entered into this notes file.

I'll agree that the upload directory needs cleaning up, since there has
been stuff sitting in there for a long time. We need to give Steve as much
help as possible in doing this. Perhaps anyone who has uploaded stuff and
still finds that its in .UPLOAD should send Steve mail telling him what it
is so he can put it in the right place. Make sense?
