4843.0. "Pro Fills " by SALEM::LEIMBERGER () Mon Jun 24 1991 07:46

    I have been seeing ads for Pro Fills in Avid magazine for some time
    now. Well I got around to having my dealer order it for me, and picked
    it up this weekend. It is a very nice package to say the least.
    Pro Fills is basically a disk full of pallets,textures,and brushes to
    be used with Dpaint III(and other programs). The brushe are supplied in
    both Hres, and interlaced format. The Hres brushes can be used in low
    res but are of course twice the size. The directories for brushes are
    Bricks, Tiles, Paneling, Weaves, and a Misc. directory. Textures
    include Blocks, Speckle, SqrTer, Stones, Stucco, StuccoCoarse,
    StuccoFine, Terrazzo, Texture1, and Texture2. Some of the brushes
    supplied give great effects. The "RaisedTiles" brush will Fill an area
    with the Tile, it's shadow, over a solid background. The Lattice brush
    in the weave gives a great 3D effect.
    	All the brushes are compatable with Color fonts, and use the last
    six colors in the dpaint pallette. I have played with Pro Fills quite a
    bit this weekend, and highly reccommend it for video backgrounds etc.
    	Now I have heard the same statement made in regards to Pro Fills
    that was made when I purchased VidGen. "I can do that in Dpaint
    myself". Well many can but I don't have the Ability,or time to generate
    this quality of brushes. and in the case of VidGen there is no way that
    DpaintIII can give you the utility offered by that program. If you want
    instant, professional presentation backgrounds then this is a viable
    option. list $29.00

    There is an examples drawer on the disk, but due to the nature of the
    product their are restriction to posting the files.

4843.1will try withSALEM::LEIMBERGERMon Jun 24 1991 07:526
    I plan on trying Pro Fills with TV Text Professional this evening. If
    they work well together it will be great. Also on the list to Try are
    Pro Video Post, BroadCast Titler 2, and I'd like to map some brushes
    in Imagine.

4843.2Profills works for meDECWET::DAVISyou always get what you deserveMon Jun 24 1991 13:189
    I used the Profills 'tile' hexagon to brush map a floor in Imagine. It
    looks quite good. I will have to rediscover dpaintIII and figure out
    how they did their title page. Profills is a great bargain for those
    who do not have the time or inclination to build high quality
    backgrounds and fills from scratch. I have used some of their patterns
    to create backgrounds for use in 'Simgen'. Works great! Now if only
    I could get a GOOD marble texture.

4843.3marble most requestedSALEM::LEIMBERGERMon Jun 24 1991 13:365
    The people that did Pro Fills had a tutorial in Avid magazine. They
    stated that Marble was one of the most requested textures(Pro Fills 2
    is in the wings) but they could not include it because it has to be
    applied to a whole screen to get a realisitc texture.

4843.5AvidSALEM::LEIMBERGERTue Jun 25 1991 12:0123
    Avid is The Amiga-Video Journal. It is a small mag 30-40 pages printed
    in 3 colors?? and printed on what can best discribed as a good quality
    newsprint. However I read it for content. The May 91 issue was sent as
    a sample(get one every time I buy high end video software). It also
    contained
    	Dabbling in dpaint- fading logos in & out
    	More toaster tricks- inside tips for video toaster
    	Imagine revealed- Focusing on animation
    	Great Video backgrounds- Understanding the fundementals
    	Using Pro Fills - professional techniques
    	how it works - video tape recorders
    	ADPRO- a review.

    Now they also have coverage of Pro Video post, and seem to favor the
    developers of high end Video, graphics etc. Always a tutorial on dpaint
    and specials. May's was video toaster in the 3000.
    	I consider it expensive at $36.00 a year but will subscribe
    shortly. I let my amigaWorld die off and will put the money into Avid.
    Avid has more meat in it's 40 pages than two amiga worlds. No glitz,
    same ads every month but at least I learn something every month.

4843.6correct number?DECWET::DAVISyou always get what you deserveTue Jun 25 1991 18:307
    Are you sure that is the number? I called, no one was home, but got an
    answering machine. It sounded like someones home phone number judging
    from the recorded message. It was in two languages English and
    possibly French. I left my name, number and message anyway.

4843.9It smacks of elitism butSALEM::LEIMBERGERWed Jun 26 1991 08:1512
    With the purchase of two new Imagine Products, I seem to recall they
    were mentioned in Avid, with a hint of supporting articles to be
    published. They were Map Master, and Surface Master(covered in Imagine
    note). I mention this because it appears Avid draws it's article
    base from a small but elite group of amiga artists to the point of
    almost being biased. You will see the same names, and products pointing
    to one another over, and over. After awhile you get the impression that
    they all play golf together. I noticed that Pro video Post is given
    a lot of press with Broadcast Titler given mention only grudgely.
    However considering the status of the contributors, and content of the
    articles I have no choice but to subscribe.

4843.10AVID over here in Europe ?DECAUX::VNATIM::HELMUTI can C clearly now, my brain is goneWed Jun 26 1991 08:308
	Does anybody know if there's an European publisher for Avid.

	It would also help if anybody could publish the name and address
	of the stateside publisher.

	Thanks.

4843.12I got the April '91 issueDECWET::DAVISyou always get what you deserveWed Jun 26 1991 22:3125
    re -.3

    I picked up the April issue from a local dealer gratis. I called
    Avid and they are going to send me the May issue to help me decide if I
    want to subscribe or not. I got more 'nuts and bolts' information out
    of the April issue than I've gotten from all of the Aworld issues
    this year. The April issue has a great tutorial on developing an
    animation in Hi-Res 16 color for a commercial. The animation has to
    fit on one floppy. It goes on to describe animating a logo in
    DpaintIII. What I enjoyed about the tutorial was the methodology and
    the real world problems encountered getting the project completed
    within the deadline. The issue is 32 pages cover to cover. I am using
    one of the techniques described in the issue in an Imagine scene I'm
    creating. The rest of the magazine covers:

    	TBCs & Toasters: A buyer's guide
    	How it works: Picture resolution and frequency
    	Toaster Tricks
    	Pro Video Post: hints & tips
    	DCTV: An In-Depth Review
    	2D Modeling: A DpaintIII Animation Project

    Not bad stuff!
