4841.1 | How about playing ELITE ? | DECAUX::VNATIM::HELMUT | She's always a VAX to me | Mon Jun 24 1991 04:16 | 16 |

Dave,
ELITE is available for Amy as well, it has some enhancements
compared to other versions, but I remember that older versions
aren't compatible with A500/A2000. Kind of corrupted copper-list
which destroys the screencontents after a short while.
About Conqueror as I remember correctly, it is released under
the same name, but I don't know how good/bad it is.
Carrier Command is a nice program but also a very tough one.
I also have my problems with it, so I haven't played it very
much. Some hints or tricks are highly appreciated.

4841.2 | ELITE runs fine for me! | GIDDAY::MORAN | | Mon Jun 24 1991 04:38 | 13 |
| Hi Dave,
I bought ELITE about 2 years ago to run on my old 500. After being
'ELITE' on 3 other computer systems I was very impressed with the amiga
version (though it is hard!!).
Recently I just bought an A3000 and the same ELITE runs fine on that. Also
the game runs using interrupts so the speed is the same regardless of
whether you have an accelerated machine or not.

| Virus is the Amiga implementation of Zarch and Conqueror is the tank
game. In my opinion they are both crap. Poor gameplay and really naff
controls. However, others may (if they must ;-) ) disagree.
Battle Command is a fairly recent tank game that is a tank based
version of Carrier Command. I never thought it touched on the
brilliance of CC though.
Me, I've got quite a lot of recent software but I still keep going back
to Wings. This, to me, is real quality software. Can't wait for Wings
II (though I don't know who's actually got the rights to it now).

Jamie,
what do you wanna say with that ? Has Cinemaware gone bust ?
It would be a sad thing, they did very well stuff almost all
the time.
cheers

| Yeah, they've gone down the tubes. As you say, it's a real shame. They
produced some great games. Still, I've heard Wings II is still to be
released.
Also the company that was to be bringing out NEBULUS 2 and HUNTER (have
you seen the demo ? Looks amazing) went bust a while back too (this MAY
be HEWSON but not sure) fortunately, these two games WILL be released
as someone else has bought them.

4841.6 | What about the CDTV titles from Cinemaware ? | DECAUX::VNATIM::HELMUT | She's always a VAX to me | Mon Jun 24 1991 09:05 | 7 |

Cinemaware had great plans about various CDTV-titles. What's with
them ? Where are the programmers now ? They should be able to do
it under another label, aren't they ?

| Defender of the Crown is on CDTV. Don't know about any of their other
titles though.

I haven't played this for quite a while but here goes;
If the quick play option is selected where you are allocated islands already
colonized. Move out of range of any islands and sit back and see what islands
the computer attacks and colonises. It can only colonise an island if it is
physically very close to that island. The computer seems to attack the islands
in the same order every time so I tend to catch it next to around the third.
If you know where it is do not attack with the drones but use these to recon
the enemy carrier position. Steam full speed at the enemy carrier and blast
mercilessly with the laser cannon. It doesn't have one so can't retaliate!
You should either render it helpless or destroy it utterly before the cannon
overheats.
If playing the long version cut off the enemy carrier supply lines with long
distance kamikaze drone attacks. 4 missiles see off the command centres of
the islands to start with and then a suicide dive as well at later stages.
Don't bother with the virus's , just blast and rebuild!
Hope this helps "Me find Machine, Me fix"

I am new to this and would like some advice if possible. I am planning
on purchasing an A500 and two of the games I have my eye on are put out
throught LUCASFILMS. One is 'Thier Finest Hour - The Battle of
Britain' and the other is 'Luftwaffe'.
Can someone please give me thier opinions on these products?
Thanks,
Mike

I've purchased and used "Their Finest Hour..." quite extensively as I
am a real fan of high quality flight simulators. My opinion of TFH
is that it is an excellent game from a technical point of view
(graphics, sound, historical accuracy etc.) but that it just doesn't
have that hard-to-define quality of "playability" that you experience
with games like Microprose's "F-19 Stealth Fighter" or "Silent Service"
(original C-64 version *only*, unfortunately). I also had much more
plain old fun with "Interceptor" even though alot of "reality freaks"
pass it off as a just a toy.
This brings up that old dichotomy of playability vs. accuracy. I'm being
very opinionated here, in the hopes that otherswill respond in like giving
you a balanced view. To me there has to be a balance between the two.
Playability is to me is the emotional attachment you develope for a game
that suceeds in really firing up your imagination. "Elite" has
probably never been topped in this regard. "Falcon" is probably the
ultimate in accuracy, but I for one, find it hard to become
emotionaly attached to a game that is so damn difficult to learn to use
at a reasonable reality level (say Captain), and then offers so little
in range and scope in terms of gamesmanship (I've only used the
original version - more experienced users please comment). I would
still put "Falcon" high on my list however. But all in all, the best
overall blend of the 2 qualities mentioned has got to be, in my
opinion, "F-19 Steath Fighter". I used it for over a year on my C-64,
and I bought the Amiga version as soon as it came out and I'm still
using it. Definately give it a try. Here are my rankings:
1. F-19
2. Falcon (very far behind)
3. Interceptor
4. Their Finest...
5. Fighter Bomber
So, as I said this was very opinionated, but I hope it will provoke
others into replying which will give you a large base of information
from which to draw.

| Have you taken a look at THUNDERHAWK ? It's a helicopter sim that has
some great graphics, reasonable controls and loads of different
missions graded by difficulty and over many different areas ranging
from sea through desert to snowfields...
I agree with you about Elite though; that's by far my favourite game
ever (on the old BBC - NOT on the Amiga) - I believe Elite 2 is
still going to happend for the Amiga...
Jamie.
