I was noticing that in some of my older amiga software, a number of subdirectories have a file called .fastdir and was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about what it does, how it works? I assume from its name it's probabley used to speed up directory access in some fashion but I've never been able to find it documented anywhere and was curious as to its function. Thanks Frank

.fastdir, are files left around by a diskmaster type utility called CLIMate. It simply contains a list of the files within that directory. This was usefull for floppy drives as CLIMate would check the date of the .fastdir file vs the modification date on the directory and if no changes had occured it would use the .fastdir file to obtain the directory listing and save lots of time. But any .fastdir files laying around now, can just be deleted. Steve. | |||||

With reference to .fastdir files... you can get a small util called KILL.FASTDIR which can searce your floppies and delete all of these files if you need to reclaim some disk-space; however these files are usually pretty small. Incidentally, the newest version of CLImate has a button at the top of the display so you may disable the .fastdir function if you don't like it (I think version 1.21). - JIM CAD* |
