4821.0. "Faster access times?" by KAHUNA::SUMNER () Fri Jun 14 1991 18:48

It takes about 18 seconds to load the frame buffer on the VT from the
Quantem 50Meg HD. I know a GVP accelerator would GREATLY reduce this
access time, but can't swing it yet. I have heard from a rep at Newtek
that with the Quantem drives I can go into the HD tool box and toggle
the "reselect" option to = NO and this will reduce the access time also.
Don't no how much.

Has anyone changed this option to gain greater speed from the HD?

Thanks,
~Ray

    	18 sec doesn't seem so bad. How much speedup are you trying to get?

    	Setting reselect to NO should be faster for one process or if you
    have only one hard disk. My guess is no more than 10% faster ( maybe
    18 down to 17 sec ). It will make multi disk access slower. You are
    telling the SCSI controller to lock onto one drive.

4821.2what are you trying to doSALEM::LEIMBERGERMon Jun 17 1991 06:018
    I know a Video Production shop in Salem N.H. that owns the toaster. It
    uses Broadcast Titler 2.0 to do it's video titling because the toaster
    was giving them a 3-4 second lag on titling. I diden't think that was
    bad but they felt it lookd like an eternity. Regardless of processor,
    or drive used you may experiance the same problem. It switches realtime
    but it takes time to move the seperate modules in and out. While you
    may be able to get more speed the question is Can you get enough.

    What I'm doing is video taping stills. About 7 sec. view per still is
    all I want. With my present set up I transition between the two frame
    buffers, pause the record deck then load a buffer. The "pause" is giving
    me a small glitch when using "video in" on the monitor, I guess that
    could be acceptable, however, when going thru the RF that glitch is
    much worse.

    What I'm after is to be able to load the frame buffer do the transition
    to the program out in less than 10 sec. And, that's not going to
    happen without a accelerator board. I was hoping setting "reselect"
    would gain me alot more.

    But, when I went in to HD Tool Box I could not find "reselect", could
    you tell me where it's at?

    As far as using the titling goes, It's fast enough for my applications
    and the output is excellent.

    Thanks,

4821.4preload memory??SALEM::LEIMBERGERMon Jun 17 1991 11:356
    The Toaster demo as System Eyes can do this. When we load the demo you
    see it go through the motions slowly then after it is loaded it runs
    fast without any hesitation. I don't know what is controlling the demo
    (script?) but it is obvious that they are queing up everything and then
    executing it out of memory.

I just bought the 33MHZ GVP board for my toaster and the load time is about
3 sec.
