4816.0. "Compression depression." by TROA02::TONIZZO () Tue Jun 11 1991 21:59

I know you readers are probably getting sick of hearing this but here
it goes anyway. Having recently purchased an AMIGA 2000 I am very
interested in getting some of the public domain software available. I have
found the location of the programs but have some questions.

    1. Exactly what hardware/software is needed to download these programs?

    2. I have read about the compression programs but don't know the exact
steps to use them. Could someone give me a simple explanation?
(ie. a sample of how you would download and decompress something)

Some help would be much appreciated.

    thanks,

    paul

Your Right! Most of us are sick and tired about hearing this. However
in an effort to help I can offer this advice. All you need is a Modem
a communications package, and copies of ARC,LHARC,and ZOO or whatever
other compression program was used to cpmpact the file. All these are
available on this net,and have been discussed intensely in this notes
file. There are too many compression formats now available to give a
tutorial on this now. But the info on downloading, and such is all here
for the looking, and the compression files have documentation, and most
often command line help(type program name no argument to see help).
Just do a serach for "Downloading" and you will get many of your
questions answered. If you find a program for communications you like
but can't get it installed (need it to download, but of course you may
not have the ability to download until you get program) then let us
know and we will try to get a disk to you to get you started. You could
get VT100 from a user group,or dealer near you. Use that to get started
    and then build on that.

    Paul,

I had the same question a few months ago when I got my system. A
person on the net was nice enough to send me the software I needed.
So, if you still need the software I'll be glad to send it to you.

You may also want to search through the last 2500 notes or so for
anything with "new user" in the title. These topics typically deal
	with downloading issues.
