4811.1 | Sourcing from the States | VIVIAN::D_VISTUER | | Tue Jun 11 1991 07:12 | 24 |
| Greg,
We meet again !. Your right stuff for the Amiga in the states is
cheaper than in the UK. As an example, I want to get ICD's ADspeed for
my machine. The cheapest price in the States is $209 from Creative
computers. In the UK the cheapest price is #149.95 and that's only for
an order of 5 or more.
However, there is and important lesson to learn. When you buy
something from the States and it comes to the UK, you must pay import
duty and V.A.T., V.A.T. being 17.5% and import duty being 3% (I think)
means that my US sourced Adspeed with cost (all in) #149.00 . Your
memory board will cost you about #122.00 .
So, with this in mind it seems you only benefit on this type of
transaction with certain purchases and by no means will you benefit on
every US purchase.
Finally, I know people who have done this and they are perfectly
happy with their purchase and the savings made !.
Ultimatley, the likes of us need a contact in the States who can
purchase on our behalf. Nobody springs to mind. C'est la Vie !.
Regards.

| Who adds on the VAT and import duty? When I sent packages to my brother
in Canada I don't remember adding stuff on. I sent them as "gifts"

re .2
In the few personal transactions I have made, the process is clear.
The US person or company is required to declare the value of the item
shipped to the UK. When I used UPS they had a extra form. The person
in the UK is then charged the VAT or duty when the package is
delivered.

How do we stand as regards to sending stuff via Digital internal mail.
I know someone who used to receive Nintendo games from a Deccie friend
in the states. The games were sent in a normal internal mail envelope.

| I saw a blurb about this pass by my terminal. It stated that mail would
be audited, and any non dec mail would be returned to the sender, if no
return address was supplied it would be trashed. This was in accord
with internal cost reduction.

ps. BTW I fully support the above attitude. While it seems petty I
can see where the abuse factor could be very high. You could look at
this as using company resources for personnal Gain. DEC is very liberal
in most instances, but is starting to tighten the belt now

| re -1 I was thinking that after I added my note. It makes sense that
this would be the case, if for no other reason than you would be
bypassing whoever, or whatever it is that levys import fees etc.
I know that if I order an object off dial, and it is outside the
states(canada) then there is a added hassle to get it shipped in.
You have to declare it's value even if it has ) dollars left in
the capital loop. All to confusing to me(I don't even bother to
mail in my reg. cards for games from other countries).
