4796.0. "VT emulator problems..." by FILTON::FENTON_R (Stop Kidding Yourself) Thu Jun 06 1991 08:59

I am now a pretty satisfied user of the "Smokey X0.6" VT emulator. I
still have a couple of problems which I'd be grateful for any advice
    on:-

-is there any way to program the keypad (as opposed to the function
    keys), and

-I have been attempting to emulate the functions of some of these keys
by using <CTRL> with the function keys along the top (ie you say
something like PF20 = "^[[23~"), but it doesn't seem to work. Does this
    method work for anyone else?

I suppose there have been many versions of Smokey since the one I've got
    - do they offer significant advantages?

    Thanks
    Rog

4796.1The answer is probably in this conferenceTOOK::DROBINSONThu Jun 06 1991 14:1316

I think you need to search through the notes conference.
    DIR/TITLE="smokey" and
    DIR/TITLE="VT200"
    Should do it.

Although development stopped on Smokey quite awhile ago,
there is a version that uses the A500/A2000 full keyboard
that should give you full VT200 keypad support. I don't
understand why you would want to program the keypad when
it is such as integral part of using a vt200. Anyway,
I don't know the answer but I'll bet it is one of the existing
    notes.

4796.2Not that easy...FILTON::FENTON_RStop Kidding YourselfFri Jun 07 1991 07:4711
I've already done what you suggest, but haven't found an answer. As
regards why I'd want to program the keypad, I mostly use the machine
for WPS-PLUS use, and would like all the cut/paste etc. functions where
I'm used to finding them. Funny thing is, most of the are already - but
the top fpur keys are wrong - the ()/* ones that is - and also cut &
paste (ie the - and + pad keys).

    Hope someone knows the answer...

Get the newer version mentioned. You can specify in your init file to
map those four keys correctly. Your version has those four keys
mapped to F1-F4 at the top of the keyboard.

Better yet, get VLT from one of the fish disks. Its supported and
is a lot more robust.

Trouble about getting either of these is, I don't have facilities to
download these things. That is, I may well have the facilities (I think
there's Kermit on the disk), but no idea how to use them. Does anyone
in the UK have either or both of the ones you mention, who would be
willing to copy them onto a blank disk if I sent one?

    Thanks

Note 705 is the note for Smokey. X1.1a is the latest (and probably
last) released version. It fully supports the keypad on the non-1000 Amigas.

You have Kermit and X-Modem support built into Smokey X0.6. Read any of
the hundreds of notes in this conference explaining how to do downloads.

4796.6Need a little help?HAMPS::EASTPerfick.....Mon Jun 10 1991 13:258
    Rog,
Mail me, HAMPS::EAST with what you want. I can get it off the
network for you. Then, if you like , we can run an off line tutorial
on how you can do it.

Smokey Version 1.1A _acts_ like a _real_ vt200 for VMS. It emulates
at least most or all of the VT200 firmware routines. Because of
this there is Mike's note "FOR DEC INTERNAL USE ONLY!!" in the title
bar. On node VIDEO:: (i forgot the exact disk/logical) there are
test-routines for all of our terminals. Smokey pass the test for
    the VT200-series.
The thing with the "$[23~" means that you should $set term/escape
Anybody remember the good old TOPS-20 TV-editor, i use it sometimes
until these days and i had the "escape problem" with it when i
    started using Smokey.
Anyway Smokey has the best emulator available! The file-transfer
capabilities (only Kermit and a very old XModem-implementation)
    are a different thing.

    Trouble is, I can't "$set" anything, as I'm not a DCL user (ALLIN1
captive account). Well not officially anyway, so I don't really
understand DCL commands. I'll just have to hope I come across some good
    Samaritan with V1.1.

I have a version (not sure which one yet - I'll check tonight) that I
could copy for you. I work in Newbury and happen to know of a chap who
is currently working between our 2 sites. He could deliver said disk if
    you still need it.

Please mail me if you require any further info. NEWOA::EVANS or

Be quick - I leave Digital next week on the 16th.
