4784.0. "Hunting for an A2000 Power Supply" by BAGELS::BRANNON (Dave Brannon) Thu May 30 1991 19:04

The power supply in my A2000 finally died. Any recommendations for
places to get a new one in the Eastern Mass. area? Cost?
    Horror stories?

It wasn't a dramatic death, it just doesn't do anything when I turn
it on. All I see is the power light and keyboard shift lock light
flicker once, then nothing. No fan spin, just white screen.

    Dave,
I don't know what you have done to determine that the power supply
is bad, but from your note I don't think it's the power supply. It
sounds like something is causing the power supply to shutdown to
protect your system. I suggest you disconnect everything you can from
the system and remove any add-on boards, disconnect hard drive and
floppies. Check if the fan turns a little when you power on.

As for a replacement or a good repairman in Eastern Mass I suggest
the memory location or a new place in worcester ( run by Phil Collins
    the phone is 508-831-1116 ).

the floppies are still connected, but everything else has been removed.
Didn't want to crowbar the power supply.

The fan blades do jump a little bit when I flip the power switch, but
it doesn't try to spin. Just looks like some power got to it.
And the fan blades do spin freely, it isn't clogged with dust.

Next step is to try the fan hooked up to another power source to see
if the fan died. (I've heard rumors that some CBM power supplies
shutdown if the fan isn't running).

I've seen that exact behaviour when the supply is NOT loaded on DEC
power supplies. They require a specific ammount of loading to regulate,
otherwise they don't come up.

A new/latest rev power supply for the 2000 cost me $140 about 12-14
months ago at the memory location. They had them in stock at the time
(luck?). I had an out of rev supply that wouldn't work with a
2630... I didn't believe it could be the supply until it was swapped
and all the problems went away (I watched during the swap...)

That's mighty strange... what could the 2630 be so picky about?

Hopefully they will be in stock when I get around to visiting the
Memory Location. This is the 2nd power supply in my A2000, the
first one died within the 90 days. And then I had to wait about
3 months before the repair shop could finally get a power supply
from CBM. I hope that shortage was just a manufacturing glitch
    that has since been corrected.
