4783.0. "Looking for Golf game on Amiga..." by KOOZEE::OWEN (How to accelerate a MAC: 9.8m/sec^2) Thu May 30 1991 15:57

Last night, I saw what I consider to be a game far superior to any Amiga game
of its type that I've seen... and it was on an MS-DOS machine.

It was a golf game call LINKS Golf (Lynx, or Linx or something like that).

The game seemed tailor made for play on an Amiga. Digitized sounds, digitized
pictures, real animated movement from digitized pictures.

I'm wondering if maybe it IS available for Amiga, or will be soon...? Anyone
know?

Thanks,
Steve

Yea, I fell in love with it too. I called Access and was told to expect
the AMIGA version in early 1992. The movement of the golfer is soooo
natural it's amazing. Game play is very good also.

How does it compare to PGA Golf ? PGA must be the best golf game
currently on the Amiga. I know someone who was really impressed by an
arcade golf game he saw; it had overhead views of the shot etc... sort
of took the idea in PGA of showing a different camera angle to an
    extreme.

The "camera angle" idea seems to be gaining popularity these days, what
with Indianapolis 500, the racing game, having all kinds of different
    angles.

In the last issue of ACE is a short preview about a new
golfgame from MicroProse. It's in a very early stage of
development but one of the outstanding effects is that
after offswing the view changes to a virtual camera following
the ball, thus enabling you to enjoy the golf course in every
	detail.

Hope this will be available on Amy as well, and hopefully sooner
	than later.

	But we all know MicroProse...

    Re. -2

I've played PGA golf and still like LINKS better. PGA golf has one
feaure that I do like which is after the ball is hit, at the half way
point of its tragectory, the view changes to the landing zone. The
thing I hate about PGA golf is how they show the lie of the ball on the
green. The "green" screen keeps poping up even if you hit your shot
short. I think LINKS will be THE GOLF GAME when its available (IMHO).

I know it's been awhile since anyone has replied to this note, but
I'm hopeful that there's still a few "die-hard" golf fans out there
who are ready to offer their opinion to me!
I bought PGA Golf, but it was a toss up between PGA and
Jack Nicklaus Unlimited Golf and Course Design. I haven't heard any
reviews about Jack Nicklaus' game in this note and was wondering if
anyone had it and can give me some insight?

I,too,am in awe of "Links"!! I read a review about the game in
"Computer Gaming Monthly" magazine and I'm also waiting for it
to hit the software shops in Amiga version......

If your interested (or anyone else) I have a brand new copy of
Jack Nicklaus gold and course design I'l sell cheap (like make me an offer).

I've never played it (was given to me by the author!) but I don't think it
runs on 68030 (and 020) based machines...

I was talking to a guy that said he saw a beta release of a new golf
game for CDTV. He said the courses were actually digitized pictures,
of the real course. he said it was the next best thing to being there.

4783.8The perfect golf for a miniature computer?TENAYA::MWMFri Aug 16 1991 13:126
I know, it's only vaguely related, but I have a distributable miniature
golf game _written in AREXX_. It runs on anything with AREXX, but wants a
32 bit processor for reasonable performance. I'll upload it to tape: if
anyone wants it...

!!! I'm amazed! Just out of curiosity, do the docs for 2.0,
(which includes AREXX) come even close to explaining that you
can write something like this? Everything I have read or heard
implied that it was mostly an interprocess/interapplication
    communications language/tool.

Also, isn't there a pd or shareware AREXX compiler? That might
speed it up some for mere mortals seeking "reasonable
    performance" ;-)

Since this is a tangent any followups should go to the AREXX topic,
    wherever that is.

I have both Jack Nicklaus Unlimited Golf and Course Design as well as
PGA. I prefer playing PGA because it seems a little more realistic. My
scores on PGA are much closer to what I actually shoot in golf. However,
there are some features of Jack Nicklaus that are great! The course
designer is awesome. You can build a course from ground up and affect just
about every detail of the course. The graphics aren't as good as PGA,
but in Jack Nicklaus, you have the option of viewing the course from any
place on the course (they call it "walking the fairway"). Jack Nicklaus
also gives you replay and reverse-angle replay.

My biggest complaint about Jack Nicklaus is the time it takes to paint
the screen and the way it does it. It paints it from left to right in
spurts of about an inch at a time. For some reason this spoils the 3d
effect for me. The screen paints *did* speed up considerably when I
installed an ADSpeed in my 2000 though.

I think they are both good games, but I don't think the ultimate golf
game has come out yet. Maybe Links will be it. All of the golf games
seem to be ports from the IBM world. I would like to see one that takes
advantage of the Amiga's great graphics and sound capabilities.

I've seen PGA on the Ami and the PC. I was amazed that the Amiga
version seems to use the PC graphics!! It would be a *better* game if
    they made some Amiga graphics.
