4778.0. "Kick-Off 2" by XSTACY::PATTISON (A rolling stone gets the worm) Wed May 29 1991 08:59

Kick-Off 2 is (I imagine) virtually unheard of outside of Europe, but it has
been one of the biggest sellers (if not THE biggest) over here recently.

There are several soccer simulation games, but this one is generally considered
to be the only one worth purchasing. I bought it recently, and found it hard
to play initially, but very addictive.

The game itself is presented as an aerial view of a soccer pitch. You can play
as a team, or as one player in a team. The game can be configured in many ways,
including weather conditions, surface, skill levels, match duration, and team
tactics. (This is the games biggest strength)

Players movements are controlled via the joystick/fire button, which is quite
a struggle to begin with, so its best to start at 25% of normal game speed.
An invisible referee monitors the game to ensure there is no foul play, but
sometimes his decisions are a bit suspect (like in the real game). Players can
get injured, booked and even sent off. Not all of the real rules are applied,
no "offside" for instance, but the Amigas own gameplay is well varied and
entertaining.

Does anyone else play this game? I'm asking because there are several add-on
data disks available which contain various different things, but I'm not sure
if any of them are worth the extra money.

I do have some complaints about the game itself, mind you, namely..

a) An annoying bug in the awarding of corners. Just occasionally, the ball is
replaced in the corner at the wrong end of the pitch

b) The inability to change the names of players. It seems silly having gone
to the trouble of creating strips for countries like Italy and Spain when
all the players are called things like Williams, Nicholls, and Hughes!
(Do any of the extra disks allow you to change players names?)

c) Chipping and heading the ball is very hard to master, although the Amiga
does it with ease (not fair!)

4778.1really the final whistle?DUCK::AYRESRVictim of Murphys lawWed May 29 1991 09:4715

My advice to you would be to get hold of a copy of THE FINAL WHISTLE.
It's an add on disk for Kick Off 2 and makes the game much more
    enjoyable.
For example, there are off-sides, overhead kicks, better heading
techniques. With extra memory I believe there's a referee and
    lines-men.
The only bug I've found (so far) is that the goal keepers sometimes
dissapear, which is a relief sometimes cos it's bloody hard to score
    past the computer.

If you like the original - get the final whistle.

4778.2The (semi-) Final WhistleRIVAGE::GATESWed Jun 05 1991 06:1926
Hi Russ (How is Reading? I bet its not as hot as Valbonne :-),

Offsides? I know there is an offside switch in the OPTIONS but I have
never seen an offside awarded. It is true about the goalkeeper
disappearing; that can be very annoying when it is your goalie!

Other bugs I have found :-

    1. When the ball goes to the corner of the pitch, the game can crash.
(I suppose the program can't make up its mind whether its a throw-in
        or a corner)

    2. When the Amiga players kick the ball in to touch and the ball only
just crosses the line, the throw is initially awarded to the human
player only to have the ref blow his whistle again and award it to
       the Amiga.

I read somewhere that Anco will be bringing out another version of the
Final Whistle to fix these bugs. Another niggle is the League. All the
teams are European National sides. Why, not use English 1st division
sides for the English release of the software?

These points aside, its a good, addictive game with extra sound effects
    to add to the atmosphere.

Also sometimes if an Amiga player slide tackles you when you are taking a
throw-in (a bit over zealous!) you get awarded a free kick off the edge of the
pitch, and as soon as you kick the ball a throw is awarded against you!

Well, you can rename all the teams and redo the colours, then save
the league to a data disk, to load later. This would be MUCH better if you
could do the same with players names. I can't understand why they didn't
think of that.
