4753.0. "IFF to GIF" by KAHUNA::SUMNER () Mon May 20 1991 13:11

    Does any body know where I can find a IFF to GIF converter? I need to
    be able to digitize pictures on the Amiga and transfer them to the IBM
    realm.

    Thanks,
    ~Ray

    I use The Art Department professional for this application. Their have
    been several PD programs that do GIF->RGB, GIF->IFF but I can't
    remember if any go the other way. I have had excellent results
    converting. I seem to remember something like this on the later fish
    disks but can't rember the specifics. Any help out there ? I could
    convert a few for you if you wish.

4753.5Hijack on the I*M box as well.MEO78B::MANDERSONAmiga + '030 == MicroCRAYWed May 22 1991 01:065
    there is a tool on the i*m box called Hijack which will do conversions
    between many formats including IFF to TIFF and I think GIF.

    	I think Hijack cost more than the art department on the amiga.
    If you plan on doing a lot of this type conversion then I'd say bite
    the bullet and bye Art Department Professional.(hard bullet at $250.00
    list) It will not only do the conversions for many formats but it will
    do color seps, epsf out, load from the screen,and much more. Not to
    mention that I have never seen a program that will scale a picture
    better than this on any system. It is a must have if you deal with
    several file formats.

    Check out the ray tracing notes conf (exocet::ray_tracing) from memory.
    There are a few FREEBIES written in C, which do conversions. Also try
    Fuzzy Bitmap.

4753.8re hijack - I intend to get TAD anyway..MEO78B::MANDERSONAmiga + '030 == MicroCRAYThu May 23 1991 09:3010
    re .6

    yes I am aware that hijack is expensive - I have also found the eps
    output a real problem to include as the liens are too long for the
    postscript printers). I was just pointing out an alternative....

    I personally intend to get TAD.

4753.9ADPRO epsf no problemSALEM::LEIMBERGERThu May 23 1991 11:425
    I took a graphic into ADPRO(art dept pro) and output to epsf for a guy
    here at work. I scanned the photo on the JX100 pulled it into ADPRO
    saved it as an epsf file,and printed it out through DecWrite no
    problems at all.

4753.10How much Memory for TAD Pro?RIPPLE::LUKE_TEThu May 23 1991 13:3926

    I've been wanting to convert my overhead transparencies done on the
    Amiga to postscript for years but have never been successful. I've
    tried CLAZ but it won't handle the 800x600 files I create with Deluxe
    PhotoLab. I borrowed TAD from a friend of mine quite some time ago to
    see if that would work before I made my boss buy it for me. My machine
    at that time was 3MBs with on 512K Chip and it seemed like the docs
    said it required the 1MB chip. Anyway, I borrowed it again this week
    after getting the 2MB chip upgrade giving me a total of 4MB on the
    system and it still says there isn't enough memory to create the 24 bit
    image from which all the conversions take place.

    The question is, how much memory do I need to convert an 800x600 IFF
    file with 8 colors (sometimes 16)? Since customers always ask for a
    copy of my overheads, and since printing out copies on my LJ250 is way
    too slow to be practical, and since the colored printouts copy very
    poorly on the photocopier, it would be great to be able to print them
    out on an LPS20. Any help?

4753.11TAD memory usage...MADRE::MWMThu May 23 1991 15:1720
    The question is, how much memory do I need to convert an 800x600 IFF
    file with 8 colors (sometimes 16)?

I don't recall TAD having an ESPF saver module; ADPRO does.

In any case, both versions of AD always convert to 24-bit data for
dealing with color, plus overhead depending on the program. For TAD,
you have 800 * 600 = 480,000 pixels @ 3 bytes per pixel, or 1.44Meg.
For ADPro, it's 4 bytes per pixel, kicking it up to 1.92 meg.

This memory doesn't have to be chip memory. It _does_ have to be contiguous
memory. Chip and fast can't be contiguous, so a 4 meg machine with 2 of each
is the worst case for use with ADPro.

I suspect that you're very close to having this fit. Try the ABOUT button,
and see how much memory you have. Consider buying more FAST ram. You might
try renaming s:startup-sequence and rebooting. This will bring up a minimal
CLI, with nothing else running in the background. Try again.

    I seem to remember someone saying that TAD needs a single contiguous
    chunk of memory to operate. Depending on your memory expansion board,
    you may try using MERGEMEM to get a larger contiguous chunk.

    Another possibility is to run TAD right after boot, before memory gets
    fragmented by running a number of different things.

    Is there a utility to show memory fragmentation?
4753.13can we remove loaders,operatorsSALEM::LEIMBERGERFri May 24 1991 06:3715
    	I have seven meg and on rare occassion I see this happening with
    ADPRO. What I did was to take the pick in to the jx100 software,and
    scale it down. The problem is if you can't convert to 24 bits you
    can't manipulate the image. Of course if you plan on printing them
    on an lps20 take the pics down to less colors and you mat be able to
    get a handle on them then. The ADpro software requires more memory than
    the scanner, or TAD. I think it is because of the extra operators that
    are loaded. Has anyone tried removing loaders,and or operators prior to
    running ADPRO. Next time I get an error I may do that. Several of the
    loaders(I also have the tiff etc) I don't use all the time and the same
    goes for the operators. If this helps I'll call ASDG and askk if they
    could put a requester in the next release that would allow you to
    config a min setup,and then load the operators, and loaders on demand.
    Of course I may be wrong on this but it is worth a try.
