4737.0. "Hard & Floppy Disk Drive Questions" by CTHQ2::FRERE (Ellas Danzan Solas) Sun May 12 1991 15:59

My brother-in-law bought an Amiga 500 and is now looking to add a hard
disk and another 3.5" floppy. He lives in Canada and is non-technical.
I live in MA and know little about the Amiga nor have I yet seen the
    machine.

Questions: What type (make and model) of hard disk is available
(=>40mg)? How much do they sell for and are they readily available in
the Boston area? Can it be internal? What kind of controller does he
need? Same questions for an external floppy.

anybody who wants to seel the above equipment, send me mail at
    CTHQ1::FRERE.

    Regards,

    Eric Frere

Having done both, I'd recommend adding a hard disk and at least 1MB of
memory. That makes the second floppy drive much less critical.

There are a number of units to choose from. The Commodore-Amiga 590
comes with a 20MB drive (which several of us have swapped out for
larger, faster SCSI drives) and sockets for up to 2MB of additional RAM.
Similar units from Supra and GVP come with a choice of drives and space
for 2MB+ of memory. While AmigaDOS isn't a piggish about memory as
either MS-DOS or the Macintosh, the A500 is happiest once it has more
    than 1MB of memory installed.

Since you're in the Boston area, I'd suggest a visit to the Memory
Location in Wellesley (you'll probably run into one or more of us there
on any given Saturday 8^) and ask Don or Roy (the owners) the same
    question.
