| You posted on this on note 4585 awhile back. I had managed somehow to
go off on a tangent with the CMI product. My experiance with the CMI
has been good, but I don't think I would bother with the project if
the results I get fom the PA is all it buys you. I don't expect that
the hardware hack will give you any more performance than I am seeing
today. Back a long, long time ago many people tried the 68010 chip in
their amigas. There is a note on this topic also. I think the end
result was that most went back to the 68000. The performance gain was
not worth the aggravation that they had with software
incompatabilities. I know of a person that put a 68010 in his amiga
1000 just recently,and found some games that won't run. I don't like
the thought of a hack that will not allow you to run in the normal mode
when needed. Their was a saying we used when I raced GO Karts as a kid.
"SPEED COST MONEY"
It seems to apply to computers as well.

I haven't had time to try the "new acc" yet, although I bought
the chips and hardware required. I am planning to do so soon.
And to answer one of your last question, the "original"
accelerator (from Australia) would not work A2000 nor A1000.
I don't know of any one that tried on A500. The problem is
that the screen would go to blue or green or sometimes grey
and stay there. The problem was I believe, that some chips
could not stand the added speed (memory?, agnus?...)

4731.3 | Pinouts: Are they the Same ?. | VIVIAN::D_VISTUER | | Fri May 10 1991 18:10 | 11 |
| Thanks for the info.
Concerning this project, it appears that the 68000p8 and the 68000p16
have different pinouts. Is this the case ?, or is it pin for pin
compatable ?. I think it is ?.
Regards.

Actually the hack isn't putting the 68010 in the Amiga but the game itself.
Any piece of Amiga software that doesn't work with a 68010 (or 68020
or 68030 or 68040) is broken and fails to conform to the Amiga
development rules that were published six years ago.
It's sad the the game programmers are so poor at their craft that they
causes people to avoid speeding up their machine.

The 68000p8 and the 68000p16 have exactly the same pinout if
they are in the same packaging, ie: the 68000 comes in dip
and square ( la 68030) package.

I'm not starting a flame but I totally agree with .4 Any programmer who
writes code should make sure that it is written for 68000 and he should
not use timing loops so that the code will work on accelerated machines.
If you want the code to run faster on a 68020,030 etc then release two
version of your program, normal and turbo just like they do with Ray
Tracing programs.
Programmers have seem to learnt their lesson on the IBM so lets not
give the amiga a bad name with respect to code that guru's etc etc.

4731.7 | So!, 'Net' wiring list is wrong ?. | VIVIAN::D_VISTUER | | Tue May 14 1991 13:22 | 18 |
| Re .5
Thanks. I will be using a 68000p16 that has the same style packaging as
the current 68000p8. So therefore I can take it that the 'net' wiring
list is COMPLETLEY WRONG !!!.
Anyway, I have brought the components, so I shall be giving it a go
soon and will post my findings.
Again, any info/advice regarding this project would be gratefully
recieved.
Thanks.
