4686.1 | in QA now | SALEM::LEIMBERGER | | Fri Apr 19 1991 06:28 | 7 |
| I was informed last noght that 1.3.3 is currently in QA at CBM. I was
also told that a .LZH file was sent to developers quit some time ago.
The bulk of the work was in cleaning out the bugs that trashed lower
memory, so while it may not appear much different it is going to be
a much more stable product. I wonder why CBM is bothering with 2.0
on the way ?

From what I've heard, 1.3.3 is being released because CDTV won't
be running 2.0.

Also from what I have read recently there is no upgrade path for A500
users from 1.3 to 2.0.

| RE: .1 V1.3.3 is shipping with all new equipment right now. That is,
equipment that hasn't been warehoused for the past several months!
V1.3.3 just corrects a few bugs, the most notable being the infamous
interlace bug. Most of the fixes reside in SETPATCH.
Just because CBM releases a V1.3.3 doesn't imply anything about V2.0.
V2.0 is not a required upgrade.

4686.8 | 2.0 is close | STAR::GUINEAU | but what was the question? | Fri Apr 19 1991 14:34 | 9 |
| I spoke with Andy Finkel at CBM on the phone last week. Andy (I believe) is the
"owner" of Amiga DOS.
He said that the previous weekend (this was a Monday) was when they closed all
new bug reports (no new ones accepted). The code was going off to ROM once the
remaining issues were resolved. From there it's "in the local dealers" hands -
meaning it's up to them on how/when they sell it.

"The code was going off to ROM once the remaining issues were

CBM has been saying this for over a year now!

| CBM quietly switched to 1.3.3. I ordered an A500+A590 in January. The A500
arrived with 1.3.3. The A590 was backordered, and arrived with 1.3.2 (and no
PAL for the ram controller!!!).
2.0 is liable to happen the same way. They'll announce it, and start shipping
machines (all flavors) with 2.0 in ROM.

That's the same thing that happened with the 1MB Fat Agnus (aka "Fatter
Agnus", "Obese Agnus", "Big Fat Agnus" ... 8^). At some point in late
1989, Commodore started shipping the newer version in A500s once their
supply of the 512KB model was depleted. Assuming you have the Rev 6
motherboard, it's possible to activate the fat(er) lady without doing
permanent damage (and rendering your motherboard unswappable).
It would be nice to know what problems KS 1.3.2 has that needed to be
fixed by a 1.3.3 version. I still hoping to go directly to KS/WB 2.0
even though I don't have the ECS chips -- Commodore-Amiga has been
sending distinctly mixed messages about whether this will be possible.
(I think the worst case would be that it's POSSIBLE, but that the A500
is left with so few remaining resources of one type or another that
such a move is counterproductive.)

Every technical person from Commodore-Amiga that I've every heard or
seen comment on it states that 2.0 does not require ECS.
I haven't heard any comments about 2.0 leaving a system with less
resources either: 2.0 does require twice as much ROM as 1.3, but
it comes in a ROM twice as big. I've heard claims that Amiga 1000s
will not be able to run 2.0 with out expansion memory because they
only have 256K of Kickstart memory, and so the other 256K of Kickstart
would have to be loaded into normal memory. Not that I've heard
promises that Amiga 1000s will definitely get a 2.0 release.

| V1.3.3 has several new versions of existing programs:
o LOADWB
o SETPATCH
o ECHO
o DISKCOPY
There may be one or two others ...
I believe SETPATCH corrects the infamous "interlace bug" present in
the previous version. I tried it last night, and the bug appears to
have left my system.

Out of curiosity, what is the infamous "interlace bug" mentioned in .14
if it's not to difficult to explain?
Thanks,

| Hmm .. well, put a couple of applications up using interlaced screens,
then add a third that uses a non-interlaced screen. Shuffle between
them, and at some point you'll probably observe the non-interlace
screen turn to chaos and then freeze your machine.

| No answer for over a month, and I still suffer the interlace bug
mentionned earlier.
Can anybody upload 1.3.3 or at least the new 1.3.3 setpatch
Uploading a full distribution would be illegal, but a patch
sure is legal, as long as the "functionality" remains the same.
Also, do anybody know if they corrected the SCSI c:format bug
where the disk would not initialize? (NDOS on your Hard disk)
Mentionned few times in this conference... It is quite an obvious
bug!
Thanks, if anybody takes the time to do the upload.
Vince.

| I saw the update disk, and it specifically stated that it was not to be
distributed in any way shape or form. You can probably get a 1.3.3
workbench from your dealer(thats where I got mine).
