Anyone out there saw, own or played HARPOON on the Amiga ????
I'm quite interested in getting it but would like to hear some other
    opinion's of the game.

    						Cheers,

I borrowed Harpoon from a friend to try out... It's a pretty good game, with a
large 'sneak' factor (ie. you think that you don't like the game that well, and
wonder how you stood to play it for the last 6 hours...). Harpoon, because of
the way the game is structured builds tension throughout. It starts out as a
slight undercurrent, and slowly cresendo's into a roar. That was what I liked
about Harpoon, at first the game seems a bit slow, but after your bad decisions
start coming to light you stay engrossed trying to figure a way out.

Sadly however, a much better game in the same gendre was Strike Fleet on the
C=64. Strike fleet had a big map in which all of the action could tape place
on as in Harpoon, but it also gave the user capability to board the bridge of
ANY ship in their fleet. This added a whole other dimension to the game in
which the user could SEE the missiles, other ships, planes, etc and control all
of the above from the bridge of a ship OR from the cockpit of a helicopter.
Although I liked Harpoon, I elected not to buy it, I'm still holding out for
a Strike Fleet for the Amiga!! Strike Fleet just has me spoiled.

Cheers,

JK

I think, therefore it is!
4672.2An amazing game for Naval combat junkiesRBW::WICKERTSSR IM&T ConsultantSat May 11 1991 02:3524

I have to admit to being a HARPOON junkie. It's my current kick and I
usually play it for several hours a night, off and on. Since my Amiga
sits right next to my VT220 which I use to dial into work with I
usually end up playing Harpoon while dialing in.

The real advantage Harpoon has over everything is realism. It started
life as a board game and is still going strong with regular updates to
it's database (ie tables) in that form. The board game can be quite
tedious because of the level of detail and therefore the amount of
bookkeeping required to play it right. The computer version takes care
of that and makes it a joy to play.

A notes conference (which I don't believe has been announced in
EASYnotes) exists for the discussion of Harpoon. It was created for the
board game but also covers the computer version. It can be found at:

    	MAADIS::HARPOON

There are two expansion kits already available for Harpoon. There is
also a scenario editor available that allows you to create your own.

4672.3Can't get past the @#($*& SUB!!!CSCOAC::KENDRIX_JCrisis?! No Crisis, This is FUN!Sun May 12 1991 13:3030
I gave up waiting for Strike Fleet for the Amiga and bought Harpoon. Many
Ditto's re:.2. I'm also currently suffering from a harpoon addiction. It has
become my current kick as well. I'm waiting, albeit, unpatiently for the senario
editor and the other battle sets to arrive at my dealers (currently sold out
:-{ ).

I appreciate the pointer to the Harpoon conference. I'm going to post this
there as well, but perhaps you could help me out with an embarrassing
situation. I Cannot! win the second senario in the GUIK battle set. I can't
even make it past the submarine. I deploy my helecopters for ASW patrol in all
of the lead sectors, I placed the ship with the towed array sonar 30nm ahead of
the rest of the convoy like the book says, and STILL I cannot pick up the
submarine!!! The first indication that I have that he is there is when my
WONDERFUL sonar picks up the torpedoes at 4nm. I've tried steaming very
slowly; using just passive sonar; using active sonar; using intermittent sonar,
ALL to no avail!

I thought that I would out smart the game by switching to the USSR side, play
the same senario, the computer would win, and I would be able to see how they
found the submarine and destroyed it. Well......... when I attacked
the NATO Convoy, I destroyed ALL of the ships without ever being detected.
They saw the torpedoes, but only when it was too late.

Have you or anyone else been able to conquer this one? If so, Please help!

Cheers,

JK
