4651.0. "Read errors on harddisk" by SIEVAX::CHANT () Tue Apr 02 1991 06:24

FixDisk (V1.2) reports read errors at the following 'locations' :

Block	Cyl	Head	Sector
87224	732	6	14
47243	397	0	0

I've tried reformating the partions but it still reports the error. Next I
want to try to mark the blocks as bad using PREP but prep wants badblocks in
the form of cyl,head and offset. Is sector the same as offset ? If not how
do I convert the two ?

4651.1offset, isn't that a print technique?SDOGUS::WILLIAMSTOPGUNTue Apr 02 1991 15:097
    I think that "offset" refers to the byte-offset. But you might do the
    following. If you are using MFM you are at 17 sectors per track and 1
    block per sector and 512 bytes per block. So 14 X 512 = 7168 as the
    byte offset. The other is byte offset 0. You can try these and see
    what happens.

    Is FixDisk a PD utility? If so can you provide a pointer to it or post
    it?

    I currently have a badspot on my HD0: but have had to leave a file
    (BAD.file) there to insure I don't step on it. A trick from the RT11
    days!
