I suggest you look in
TAPE::AMIGA:[AMIGA.DEMO]

and maybe in
[UPLOAD]
for the files I have not moved to [AMIGA...] yet.

P.S. I suggest a copy of DPaint III . It is a very good paint program.

4612.3 | a few simple ones | NAC::BRANNON | value added | Thu Mar 21 1991 17:36 | 18 |
| If your friend likes cats, then 'El Gato' from the Fred Fish disks
(not sure which one) is a must see. Its a demo of a digitized tiger
cat walking while the screen rotates. It needs 1mb of memory to do a
full rotation but will work in 512K with a partial rotation.
This was the first demo that I saw on an Amiga that blew my socks off.
I can understand how the digitized cat walking was done, but the
rotating the screen while doing this was impressive.
The other "demo" was the game 'Marble Madness', but with that on just about
every system today, its probably not unique enough.
Showing MEMACS with its pull down menus as the standard editor that
comes with the system would help to demo it. Especially, if your
friend has ever encountered EDLIN on a MS-DOS system.

dennis

4612.4 | couple more choices | WHAMMY::spodaryk | digging for fire | Thu Mar 21 1991 18:13 | 18 |
| It's tough to keep up with the "latest and greatest" demos, but some that
I still enjoy (although probably somewhat dated):
Juggler (the classic! first time I saw an Amiga, this was running)
Klide (nice line drawing - fast!)
RadBoogie (sound, line drawing, copper usage, nice multitasking)
Schwartz Cartoons (lot's of them, most are entertaining)
Berserk (a Schwab classic)
Walker Demos (need a couple of meg)
Digi-* Demos (really great if you're into digitizing)
BoingThrows (raytraced foulshooting)
Dr. A (raytraced dunking)
etc, etc, etc
There's also one with a spaceship revolving around a sphere, that is pretty
neat. Actually, most of them are pretty neat!

4612.5 | | KAHUNA::SUMNER | | Fri Mar 22 1991 10:03 | 14 |
| Thanks for the feedback, looks like I've got a lot to choose from.
I downloaded a few graphic files, I've got several file compression
programs but, of course, not any ZOO ones. I copied ZOO.ARC from
the utilities dir. I hope it has the compression and decompression
files in it. I've got a problem... I kermit the files from my dec
account to my XT at home, it has a 5.25 drive and the Amiga has
a 3.5 drive. I was wondering if I could transfer the files by
hooking my printing paralell port on the XT to the serial port on the
Amiga. "If" that can be done how do I open a file on the Amiga side
to accept the incoming data??
Thanks,
~Ray

4612.6 | It's easier to just dnload to the Amiga! | MR4DEC::GAY | Underground living can be Hobbit forming | Fri Mar 22 1991 10:46 | 7 |
| Where are you located? There is probably another Amiga DECcie
nearby that can give you a disk with the basic stuff on it
(editor, decompression utils). If you are near Marlboro MA,
you can get one from me.

4612.7 | The questions just keep mounting! | KAHUNA::SUMNER | | Fri Mar 22 1991 11:31 | 7 |
| I'm way out west... Phoenix, AZ. I don't know anybody out here that has
an Amiga. So, I guess I need a communications program to kermit from
my XT to the Amiga. Is there a Procom program version for the Amiga?

4612.8 | Many possibilities | KALI::PLOUFF | Ahhh... cider! | Fri Mar 22 1991 11:55 | 22 |
| Ray,
Several possibilities to get Amiga software downloaded to your setup.
First, try to download directly via modem to your Amiga. You need a
terminal emulator program that speaks Kermit, or, if your node at work
has XModem or ZModem, one of those (they're faster). To get the
necessary software, you can buy a commercial terminal emulator, get in
touch with a local DECcie, or get in touch with a local Amiga club. I
have heard that there's a lot of Amiga activity in Phoenix/Tempe and
the surrounding area, especially at Motorola.
You could also download to your PC, then run a serial cable between the
two machines and terminal emulators on both. Don't know of any
parallel port connection.
You might consider buying a 5-1/4" drive for the Amiga or a 3-1/2"
drive for the PC. On the Amiga, a commercial (Cross-DOS) or public
domain (MSH) package will mount your Amiga drive to treat both Amiga
and MS-DOS diskettes as native. There's also a rather limited utility
(PCCOPY) that comes with the AmigaDOS operating system.

4612.9 | | KAHUNA::SUMNER | | Mon Mar 25 1991 09:12 | 6 |
| Thanks Wes, I think I'll try the serial option. Also, since the Amiga
has two XT slots I wonder if I could take a controller card and 5.25
drive out of my IBM system (it has two drives) and put it in the Amiga?

4612.10 | no luck | KALI::PLOUFF | Ahhh... cider! | Mon Mar 25 1991 11:42 | 9 |
| re: XT slots
Those slots are for use with a "Bridgeboard," actually two models,
which are an XT or an AT on a board. You also get expansion slots for
the Bridgeboard, and some which can be used for either Amiga or XT
boards. Just putting a PC drive controller card in one of the XT slots
does no good, since the Amiga CPU doesn't talk to it directly.

Just color me stupid! I keep forgeting that to have any XT capability
in the system I need that bridgeboard, and that's definitly out. Well,
you suggested enough options to choose from so I'm sure I'll get the
job done.
Thanks,
~Ray
