4589.1 | SCSI + RAM <-> RAM | CRISTA::CAPRICCIO | Blind as a cave shrimp | Fri Mar 15 1991 12:29 | 11 |
| Is the GVP Series II card better than the Supra 2000 memory board, and
 if it is, why?
I'm not sure if that is a fair comparison since the GVP is a SCSI
controller/RAM expansion card and the Supra is RAM expansion only.
Otherwise, the Supra may be cheaper (even a 2MB populated one), but the
GVP would save a slot and it seems that the SIMM prices have dropped
quite a bit.

| So the difference is that it's a SCSI controller also, that I did'nt
know. I already have a 40Meg HD with controller so I don't need that
board ... I called the dealer (Amiga) and he said the Supra 2000 were
"noisy" but couldn't support his claim. He pushed the Aries board ...
he carried both boards, and prices were close ... Reading some older
notes seem to praise the Supra 2000. Do you know anything about the
Aries Ram Expansion board or heard about any problems with the Supra
2000?
Thanks,
~Ray

4589.3 | GVP seems to be rock solid & "REAL DMA" | ULTRA::BURGESS | Mad Man across the water | Fri Mar 15 1991 14:14 | 21 |
| re .0
I think the principle difference is that the GVP card is
"true DMA" (-: whereas the Supra card is ....errrr, "NOT".
I have been beating on my GVP card with Disk speed (FF329, I
think) using an RZ 23 while trying to run anything and everything else
imaginable - including bad block re-map from the GVP install disk. It
seems to be what it claims to be, i.e. "REAL DMA", I just can't slow
it down significantly. About the only thing that will slow the hard
disc light down to a blink is having a dozen or so windows open at
once and continuously clicking the front one to the back. Even this
only seems to reduce the frequency of access, not the data transfer
rates. The only way to get "bad" results from Disk Speed seems to
be to run eight copies, one on each partition - but what should I
expect (-: I actually get more total bytes per second transferred
than when I run one copy - no great surprise. I don't have a Supra
card to compare it to, I might post numbers for comparison.

| I don't own the GVP ram card, but do own their disk controller. When I
had a problem with my 2058 memory board GVP sent me an upgraded set of
pals overnight,no charge. I also have to say that their phone support
is excellent.

Oops...sorry 'bout that. I should have read GVP's ad in the the latest
Amiga World before opening my big mouth.
Anyways, I guess the DIPs vs. SIMMs argument still holds. If I were in
the market (I've got an A2091), I'd be seriously considering the newer
technology of the GVP and spend the extra cash for the SCSI+RAM and
save a slot in the process. Then again, being a true cheapskate at
heart, the new reduced price of the Supra is hard to resist...
