4565.0. "hard disks again" by WELMTS::EDWARDS () Wed Mar 06 1991 09:06

Hi guys,

	I want to add a hard disk to my A500 in DIY mode.

	I plan to use Ingo Sturm's adaptor (note 2328) with
a ST412 drive (yes, I know it has a very limited capacity
but I already have one and it'll do to try out the project)
but the OMTI controllers specified do not (any longer?)
appear to be available in the U.K.

 I have seen advertised various Seagate (ST11M/R ST21M/R
ST22M/R) and Western Digital (WD1003/6) controllers. Does
anyone have information on which one I should choose?

	Also, the Seagates seem significantly cheaper than the
Western digital. Why is this?

	Thanking you for any light you can throw on my problems.

			Paul.

4565.1Try a DTC cardSDOGUS::WILLIAMSTOPGUNWed Mar 06 1991 16:1010
    Paul,
    Is this for ST506 OMTI controller? If so you might get away with using
    a DTC controller card instead. I know that several manufacturer's are
    using either the OMTI (fastest) or the DTC (next fastest) because of
    timing constraints and speed of the controller itself. The WD
    controller specifically won't work for instance in a SPIRIT adapter or
    in the WEDGE adapter. I'll take a look at note 2328 and see what else
    I can find out.

    re: .0

    the docs for this project call out a seagate ST11-m or an OMTI 5520.

    All controllers are not the same....Timing differences etc.

    Get a copy of MAKEHD.ZOO off TAPE: read the docs. This has corrected
    logic diagram, drivers and a step by step "how to build".

    email me if you have any probs.

    	Thanks guys for the info.

    	"Topgun" I don't recognise the (name?) DTC interface could you
    elaborate please.

    	Glenn, I research the MAKEHD and see what knowledge it brings.
