| I've got it for use with Videoscape 3d. It act's kicd of like a lower
level CAD program. I like using it instead of the 3d view. (of
course, the mechanical drawing stuff I learned in school helps a lot)
It can load in sculpt objects, then save them in VS format or as plot
files for some sort of HP plotter.
I used it recently to create a model of my car. It only took me a few
hours (probably less than 6) I could not imagine trying to do something
that complex in sculpt or something similar.
You can create different objects in the different layers, and save
them, merge them together. If you have Videoscape running at the same
time, you can import them directly into VS without saveing the project
in between.

| Are the 3d objects made up triangles or rectangle/squares?
The reason I ask is some of the things I do, require wire-frameing.
Wire framing never looks that good (in my opinion) if it's triangular.
It looks cleaner when made up of squares.
Also, how is Video Scape 3d, I heard they came out with a nice overlay
program to allow easier manipulation of objects.
Thanks

Ed,
There is a round-about way of getting rectangles which is
basicaly to do a merge on two trianglular faces to make up one
rectangular face. I like Modeler3D generaly although it does take
some getting-used-to.

4545.4 | What about Pro/Motion and Videoscape3D? | SHARE::DOYLE | | Wed Feb 27 1991 09:23 | 8 |
| Well, it should be here today, I'm thinking of getting Videoscape 3D and
Pro/Motion to go with it, do you have any input on these products? How do they
compare with Sculpt4d and Turbo... (I've heard that Videoscape is alot harder
to use without the Pro/Motion overlay).
The small blurb I saw on Pro Motion looked pretty good.

| Hi again Ed.
Both of these are good as long as you can think in that mindset.
(Numbers instead of pictures of the path) Promotion makes the process
much easier. Basicly, you place the different objects, draw the path
with the mouse, modify it to do any banks, turns, etc. and it will
calculate the numbers for videoscape to do the actual animation.
There are all kinds of ways you can modify the path of the animation,
adding wind, magnetism, have it smooth out the path instead of straight
lines, etc.
Like I said earlier, if you are comforable thinking in three
diminsions, and can convert that thinking into numbers, you will have
fewer problems than someone else.

4545.6 | Like it alot. | SHARE::DOYLE | | Mon Mar 04 1991 08:56 | 22 |
| Hi
I recieved Modeler3D on friday, and I've been using it all weekend.
I even created a spaceship with it.
I definately think its more user friendly than Sculpt or Turbo.
It also has a nice preview mode thats quick on my A500 and Working with
layers is a real +++ in my opinion.
By using outline as a finnish on a polygon, I can get some Excelent
detail onto my object using lines for definition.
I just wish I could map a brush to it like in Turbo.
It's my new favorite, It doesn't have splines, or some of the other
fancier things, but it performs quickly and hasn't given me any unexpected
surprises.
I may have to get interchange next so I can swap back and forth (get the
best of three worlds).
I also had a chance to purchase VideoScape3D for $45 bucks, so I did :').
This came with a free coupon for Pro-Motion in the box!
So both registrations (including the coupon) went in the mail today!
Thanks for the reply's guys.

4545.7 | Hoe to add detail polygons in Modeler | SHARE::DOYLE | | Tue Mar 19 1991 10:11 | 17 |
|
I've been using Modeler 3d for awhile now ( and I love it), but I
have a question for you 3D pro's out there.
On disk are two examples that intrigue me, the Lotus and the F15.
They both use some sort of detail polygon to do the wing flaps (F15),
and the details on the lotus.
How are these polygons achieved? They seem to consist of both solid
and dotted lines in the editing mode.
I've read through the manual, and haven't found anything on this.
The closest I've come is by having the polygons of the object defined
along the outside paremeters of the object.
I've also experimented with Outline, but haven't had much success.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ed

| I just recieved PRO/Motion, from Aegis/Oxxi. The price was right, there was
a coupon in my VideoScape3D for it free!
Anyway I rendererd the example in videoscape3D and I must say, I was impressed
at the results.
If anyone wants, I'll upload the animation created with PRO/MOTION and
VIDEOSCAPE3D to the net.
I haven't had a chance to use it yet, I'm still familiarizing myself with the
manual.
It looks pretty good though. When I've used it a bit I'll post a review.

| I've uploaded "Fighter.lzh" and "Showanim" to tape::amiga:[upload].
A few notes about this file are required.
When unpacked, the file is over .5 meg large.
The scene was rendered in ham mode, (although it probably couldve been
rendered in 32 color mode as the objects involved don't take advantage of
the ham mode.)
I've run it easily on my machine, but I've got 5 megs. I be interested in
just how much memory is required to run it.
Also the animation is 99 frames long, with alot going on.
It's not as smooth as it could be, It could be rerendered in 350 frames for
smoothness, (as the manual suggests) but I still like it.
The format to use from the cli is.
Showanim -l fighter.anim

| I'm having a definite problem useing M3D, I like the program alot, having
used first Design3d (YUCK), and Sculpt4djr (Nice).
However I like the interface to M3D much better.
(Perhaps I find it simpler.... ;')
My problem is when I try to add detail lines to an object.
I make an object, ex: flat square.
I then try to add an arrow to the middle of the flat square.
Makeing shure my polygons are selected properly, I'll then switch to preview
mode.
Unfortunately I find that my "arrow" isn't visible in all the angles you'd
expect.
Somebody must have ran into this, it must be possible, the example objects
on disk (F-18 and Lotus) use these "detail" lines and they look great.
Help:

| I've gone through my manuals, and although I've found mention of
"Detail Polygons" in VS3D, I've not found anything that corresponds to
it in Modeler 3D.
The closest option offered is defining "Outline on a Polygon" from the
Polygon Color requestor, however this only seems to outline the polygon
leaving the interior of it blank.....

Hey, I used to make all kinds of objects with just a text editor,
and sometimes EGG and OCT. All the objects that come with VideoScape
were made with the old "Ed" text editor, including the Lotus and F-15.
The Apache helicopters from "Apocalypse Real Soon Now" and "Rush Hour"
were also made with Ed. The other "Rush Hour" objects, like the Golden
Gate Bridge and Lamborghini, were my first uses of Modeler 3D.
By the way, Modeler 3D does support detail polygons. The necessary
tools are in the "Polygon Info" requester. Basically, you select all
the detail polygons, then the parent polygon, then use the "Attach"
button in the Polygon Info requester. The "Promote" button can be used
to make detail polygons back into regular polygons.

I agree that EGG comes in handy when using LightWave. I use it
fairly often in my own work (mostly for the random dot clouds, like the
explosion in the NewTek Penn & Teller tape). Todd also used it during
the making of "Change Myself".
To answer your question, I'm afraid I don't have any time to devote
to VideoScape any more, and it was so optimized for speed that it was
kind of a dead end as far as new rendering features were concerned. For
example, its clipping method prevented the possibility of adding texture
mapping. Also, its rendered RGB values are only calculated to 18 bits
and stored internally as 12 bits (after dithering), so VideoScape wouldn't
gain much from using the new graphics enhancing devices. In
LightWave, rendering calculations and storage are of course all done with at
least 24 bits of accuracy.
