4529.0. "USENET Newsgroups" by HKFINN::MACDONALD (VAXELN - Realtime Software Pubs) Wed Feb 20 1991 13:32

The newsgroup stuff I receive on my UUCP always seems to be several
days late, but the material on here is always pretty current. Is there
a DEC node that can be used to collect these newsgroups in a more
    uptodate fashion on my Amy?

The Net Police frown on network connections from Easynet nodes to
external nodes. I think that UUCP could easily be taken as just that.
A few DEC machines (such as DECWRL and DECVAX) are on the Usenet
"backbone," but are carefully insulated from general connection to the
rest of our internal network. Since these two machines (and maybe
others) sit at key points on Usenet, and have dedicated, relatively
high-bandwidth links to internal Usenet "server" nodes like SHLUMP, we
can read news on internal machines pretty quickly. Paul, your node at
home may be at the end of a chain of several dialup links, so it's not
surprising that some news articles take a long time to reach you that
    way.

I would suggest looking for news batching software on VMS, and making
    regular downloads.
