4504.0. "DF1: doesn't want to go!" by COMICS::HOGGAN (No, I am not kidding !!!) Sun Feb 10 1991 13:02

    Hi,

    I've been fiddling about with the ole Ami 2000 over the weekend and
    removed drive df1: When I do an 'info' I get df1: bad - I could live
    with this, but if I use a program which looks for two floppies, df1: is
    still recognised as useable. I have tried combinations of jumper
    position on the back of df0: to no avail.

    The question is, is df1: switchable on the motherboard. I would look in
    the manual, BUT my system is second-hand and so I don't have a manual.

    Cheers, Dave

    You may need to change the ribbon connector. Not sure, but I think that
    is it. Plu the end that was on DF1: into DF0: and change the jumper
    over one pin.

    The jumper you are looking for is J301.

    You insert the jumper for a second INTERNAL drive and, remove it
    for the second floppy to be inserted outside the main box.

    Hubert.

re .2

I think you insert 301 to make the system recognize the second internal
floppy. An external floppy is recognized as df2: whether 301 is in place
or not. And yes, I currently have df0:, df1: and df2: on my system.

4504.4The mysterious dissapearance of J301COMICS::HOGGANNo, I am not kidding !!!Tue Feb 12 1991 05:4211
    Hi,

    Jumper 301? I'll give it a go, but I've been looking at the motherboard
    and I canna find a jumper with such a high number. I have a German rev
    4.0 board; I believe that the numbering scheme changed somewhere along
    the line. There is a large bank of jumpers along the middle-rear of the
    board, near the floopy connector on the motherboard. Does anyone know
    what they are for, or what they would be numbered?

    Cheers, dave

    Hi,

    Just to let you know that I found the jumper.

    FYI Jumper 301 is known as J36 on a german rev4.0 board.

    Anyway it works! Thanks.

4504.7DF0: and DF1: drive select LEDMAS::MCNALLMCNALLTTue Feb 19 1991 09:275
    Can I add a question to this discussion?? I took the guts out of an
    external commodore drive (The mech is a NEC) and put 'em inside the
    A2000 as df1: I put in j301 and the drive works but the red drive
    select lites between df0: and df1: seem to be reversed! When you're
    accessing df0:, df1: lites or they both lite.. any ideas on this one??
4504.8Cabling and JumpersDICKNS::MACDONALDVAXELN - Realtime Software PubsTue Feb 19 1991 11:2411
    Set the jumper of DF0: to unit 0.

    Set the jumper of DF1: to unit 1.

    Connect the *end* of the ribbon cable to DF0: and the other ribbon
    connector to DF1:.

    Depending on your system the ribbon cable may be too short to allow
    DF0: to reside in the left-hand bay. Commodore ships their 2000's
    with DF0: in the right-hand bay.

4504.9That reminds me.........COMICS::HOGGANNo, I am not kidding !!!Tue Feb 19 1991 11:5510
    Hi,

    I had (and sorta still have) a similar problem to -.2. When accessing
    DF1:, both DF0: and DF1: leds lit. When accessing DF0: none of the leds
    lit. I shall try setting DF0: as unit 0 but I suspect that it already
    is set as such. Any ideas? (I always put it down to a dodgy led in
    DF0:)

    I finally figured out the reason my DF0/DF1 lites were weird. When you
    add df1, you have do the illogical thing and NOT hook it to the other
    ribbon cable end but instead disconnect df0: and puts it's end on your
    new df1: then hook the spare ribbon cable end to df0: Apparently the
    "drive select" consists of the twist in a couple of the ribbon cable
    conductors and this drive select is actually the "LED" select! Unit
    number is probably determined by the jumpers on the back of the drive,
    and I just experimented 'till I got my NEC drive to work.
4504.11How to turn a DF0: into a DF1:?PAMSRC::63643::BARRETTTar is not a playthingTue Jul 02 1991 22:0610

    I have an original CBM 3.5" floppy drive that was a unit 0 in a system.
    I'd like to install it as a unit 1. I know all about the ribbon cable,
    and the J301 jumper; but can anyone tell me what the DRIVE jumper
    settings need to be? The underside is a maze of jumpers and I have no
    docs.

    Thanks!
