The older user2: still had an old copy of the AMIGA areas. It is

Can't answer 2, however I can answer 1.
If you are desperate waiting for a new fish, you can do the following:
Send a mail message like this to..
DECWRL::"[email protected]"
No title needed...
The body of the message should be as follows.
FTP ux1.cso.uiuc.edu UUENCODE
USER anonymous
CD /amiga/fish
DIR
Quit
That will mail you a directory listing back.
Then say you find FF898
Change the CD to CD /amiga/fish/ff898
and send the message again.
That will give you another directory listing.
Then change the DIR command to a command of the form
GET filename.ext
and send this....
You will shortly after start getting a number of mail messages that contain the
required file in UUE format.
I do the following then.
Suppose there are 5 files sent back (They are identified as 1 of 5 etc)
extract/noheader f1.uue
edit f1.uue and remove crap
do the same with 2-5
then merge all the files together in the correct sequence.
Then run UUDECODE on the final filename and you will end up with a good file.
You may have to run this file thru CVTarc to get a useable file.
CVTARC.exe and UUDECODE.EXE are both in Peevax::
Hope this helps a scad!
Stan.

4499.6 | how its done | CGOFS::OAKLEY | BCNU2 | Thu Feb 14 1991 00:35 | 20 |

A brief explaination.
I am involved with the local Amiga User group known as
AMUC - Amiga Users of Calgary. The club has been subscribing to
Fish since the beginning and as such we receive the disks within
2-3 weeks of announcement.
I usually manage to get a copy at the next General Meeting so it
can be 1 to 2 months before I manage to get a copy. Lately I have
been lucky and managed to get a copy within days of receiving.
To upload them I first diskcopy to an HD container file using the
FMS driver provided on a Fish disk which provides floppy sized
pseudo disks on my hard drive. I then have a script to Lharc the
works and a VLT script to upload the files, all in all it takes
about 30 minutes work to copy and set things up after that it runs
for about 6-8 hours for the system to finish off 10 disks after
I have gone to bed.

either. Looks like we are staying pretty current. I appreciate the time and
effort too.

Uh, if you can anyhow avoid this, please do. This puts an inordinate stress on
the DECWRL gateway. Since some time now, there's an "internal" Mail-FTP-Server
available at DECWRL::. See the dec.general newsgroup for details or send a
mail to:
nm%DECWRL::FTPMAIL
with a Subject of "FTP" and a contents of "HELP".
Cheers,

>>> commands are:
reply <MAILADDR> set reply addr, since headers are usually wrong
connect [HOST [USER [PASS]]] defaults to gatekeeper.dec.com, anonymous
ascii files grabbed are printable ascii
binary files grabbed are compressed or tar or both
compress compress binaries using Lempel-Ziv encoding
compact compress binaries using Huffman encoding
uuencode binary files will be mailed in uuencode format
btoa binary files will be mailed in btoa format
ls (or dir) PLACE short (long) directory listing
get FILE get a file and have it mailed to you
quit terminate script, ignore rest of mail message
(use if you have a .signature or
are a VMSMAIL user)
>>> notes:
-> you must give a "connect" command, default host is
gatekeeper.dec.com, default user is anonymous, default
password is your mail address.
-> binary files will not be compressed unless 'compress' or 'compact'
command is given; use this if at all possible, it helps a lot.
-> binary files will always be formatted into printable ASCII
with "btoa" or "uuencode" (default is "btoa").
-> all retrieved files will be split into 60KB chunks and mailed.
-> VMS/DOS/Mac versions of uudecode, atob, compress and compact
are available, ask your LOCAL wizard about them.

4499.11 | An example? | STAR::ROBINSON | | Mon Feb 18 1991 16:39 | 9 |
| OK. Can someone who has used this method go the extra mile and give
us an example of getting a directory and a binary file from say
abcdfxxxxxx? In particular I don't understand the compression and compacting
benefits/requirements (btoa? atob?). I have succeeded at getting
uuencoded LZH binaries mailed from abcdfetc by way of the princeton bitftp.
Thanks,
Dave

| Here is where I must differ with Christian (re: .9). Yes, the DECWRL
gateway is overloaded, but also, yes, DECWRL's FTPMAIL service is
flaky. The DEC service is the brainchild of Paul Vixie and is, IMHO,
still undergoing its shakedown. It's also slllooowww, overnight at
minimum. Suggestion: read the Usenet dec.general and dec.mail.*
newsgroups to keep up, and try using the BITFTP service in the wee
hours of Pacific Time.

| Re: .12
Yup, the DECWRL FTP service is still flakey. But the last few days it has
performed on par with BITFTP _and_ stopped to send me lharc'ed stuff
compressed. ;-)
So if possible, use the DECWRL service (but if ya can't wait... ;-).
