4487.0. "Boot from external drive?" by SHARE::DOYLE () Mon Feb 04 1991 15:08

On another note, is it possible to rewire an external drive on the 500
to allow one to boot from it?

Not that I have the answer, but are you asking if one can boot from an
attached diskette drive (e.g. DF1:) instead of the built-in one (DF0:)?
My guess is that any rewiring would occur INSIDE the A500 (and would
    thereby void the warranty).

As of Kickstart 1.3, the A500 follows a priority scheme to figure out
which drive to boot from. Some hard disk controllers set their
priority ahead of that of DF0: -- others, such as the A590, set their
priority behind DF0: so the user can boot a game or some such without
having to disable the hard disk. If you could adjust DF1's priority,
you might be able to do what you want. Again, I'd expect this to be a
hardware hack (and you could easily be left with an unbootable A500).

looking at the schematics it just might be as easy as swoping the sel0
and sel1 on the 8520 U8 > BUT can`t you buy a device that allows this?
The company DATEL comes to mind...

I have done it and it is easy,

As .2 points out it is just a matter of swapping the select lines for
drive 0 and drive 1 on the 8520. I did this by buying 2 40pin IC
sockets - soldering one on top of the other (not soldering the 2 select
lines) - and taking these lines to a DPDT switch.

The circuit diagram is like this:

sel 0 (on PC board)	----------------- -----------sel 0 (from 8520)
                                        | |
    sel 1 (on PC Board)--------------- | | -------sel 1 (from 8520)
                                     | | | |
    		                     | | +---|--- <--- No connection

If you can't read this great piece of art (The circuit aint all that
difficult!!!) then E-Mail me and I'll make a Postscript Version up.
