4486.0. "Pen-Pal upgrades from Write-n-File" by GOBAMA::WILSONTL (Lead Trumpet (Read that...LEED!)) Mon Feb 04 1991 12:05

    Pen-Pal upgrades are still available (much to my surprise) from
    SoftWood. Just send in the Write-n-File diskette and $50.00 and they
    will send you the kit. Due to the vastly reduced cost, I am going to
    take this path.

    Speaking of Softwood, I have gotten updates of Pen Pal twice now
    without even asking! Great service, although Pen Pal has a problem
    dealing with more than 4meg of memory unless you set its preferences to
    a low percentage which is almost impossible because it will not let me
    get to preferences due to my having more than 4meg of memory...
    I ended up setting the memory preferences on my 1meg A500 then
    transfering the software to the A2000. I notified Softwood.

Could you elaborate on this, please? I am about to add 2 meg to my Ami, but
Pen Pal is working fine at the moment, so what must I do to preferences before
I put in the new memory board?

Thanks
4486.3Worked ok on A2000, but will verify tonightDECWET::DAVISSay what?Tue Feb 12 1991 15:2820
    When I installed Pen Pal I had 3meg of ram. I set the Pen Pal
    preferences to use 50% of available ram. When I added another 2meg Pen
    Pal would hang upon startup consistently. After mucking around I found
    that if the percentage of ram used(allocated) totalled more than 2meg
    the program would hang. I made adjustments to the Pan Pal preferences
    to get around this symptom. I must add that I was using an A500 with a
    midget racer(68020), a 1Meg Agnus(self installed),and hard drive/memory
    expansion sub-system. i.e. not a "vanilla" amiga. The symptom could
    have been caused by other factors like a stuck bit in memory or the
    1meg agnus I installed. I started up Pen Pal(last night, in fact)
    on my A2000 and it appears to have allocated approx 3meg with no
    problems. The symptom was consistent on my A500 but I have not tested
    Pen Pal on the A2000. I will test it tonight and let you know what I
    find in this note.

    >what must I do to preferences...
    I would not do a thing unless the symptom presents itself. If it does,
    then set the percentage so that the total memory allocated is around
    2Meg and try it again. Softwood says that I shouldn't have problems
    with memory allocation.
4486.4Pen Pal version 1.3.13 works fine!DECWET::DAVISSay what?Wed Feb 13 1991 11:404
    Pen Pal works fine on my 9meg Amiga. I have Pen Pal version 1.3.13.
