I just got a DCTV for my system. I'm planning to put it to
the test this weekend.

| DCTV is a framgrabber, 24 bit framebuffer unit. It is made by Digital
Creations. I do not own one yet,but I had the opportunity to check one
out at the dealers. It is a black box around 5"X 6" X 2" that plugs
into the parallel, and RGB ports on the Amiga. The software includes a
paint program that allows you to paint in NTSC video. It has a video
input, and output(RCA Jacks). I am looking for a paintbox type product
but have several reservations about DCTV. First I want something that
will work with my Supergen 2000s. Because it lives directly in the
video slot I don't see this happening. Second I would have liked to see
the video connectors use BNC type connections. I am sure the people
that own them now will be more than willing to give a hands on review.
cost? it lists for around $495.00 if I am not mistaken. I am contacting
Digital Creations for more info.

| I had the week end to experiment and I must say that I am satisfied
but it has some flaws.
The main flaw is when you want to digitize a frame for IFF use, it
takes over one minute to get the final picture. If you have played
with a frame grabber, you can see the result on-screen and you under-
stand the importance of the correct light to get a decent IFF frame.
With the frame grabber, you can get a good frame in seconds, with the
DCTV, it "may" take up to 10 tries in order to get it.(>10 minutes)
Perhaps after many uses, I may "get to know" how to correctly light
the subject? Only time will tell.
The 24 bits pictures are great though. What you see is what you get.
The input type may be software controled as Tape or camera. When
reading a tape (freeze frame must be clear), it "time base correct it"
in the software. It makes the digitization longer. Unfortunately I
don't have an accelerator, maybe this will justify to buy one?
I have a cheap Amigen genlock and while in 24 bits, (paint or digitize) it
doesn't work, I have to use the video out directly to my set. I cannot
go trough the genlock. I guess I'll have to build a video switch
someday. It only works when I am in scan mode, i.e: press mouse to
start digitizing. I will borrow my friend's Supergen soon to experi-
ment.
The sofware I got is pretty new. (15-Jan-1991) and the box says
copyright 1991. It seems to be freshly out.
And finaly I think the book stink. It is very poorly done. Almost no
information. Just try to find what is a particular gadget do... Good
luck.
Over all, It ain't bad for less than $500.00 but it's not perfect.
Vince.

-> What is the file format for DCTV.
DCTV will any IFF resolution picture from 2 colors to IFF24.
Normally when digitizing you would save the picture in IFF24 or
DCTV format. The later is a compressed format resulting in approx
150K file rather than a 500K+ file in IFF24 format, one of the nice
things about DCTV.
It has a convert module that converts the digitized picture to any
Amiga format, and does it VERY well. I have digitized some nice
images and converted them directly from IFF24 to GIF (using PPM)
and displayed them on a DEC workstation with very good results.

that they could be displayed by my buddy's DCTV.

4482.9 | Digitizing from AG1960 | RIPPLE::LUKE_TE | Terry Luke SLO (Utah) | Thu Jan 02 1992 00:52 | 14 |
| I have had trouble getting good digitized pictures from my S-VHS AG1960
with the DCTV. My Sony Camcorder (V801) digitizes in freeze frame mode
quite well, but the AG1960 produces very jagged pictures. An article
in AVID says the 1960 produces beautiful results. Somewhere in another
article I read there is a keystroke for use in DCTV that switches
whether it starts with an odd or even line in digitizing, then some
VCRs do it differently. I wanted to try this to see if it helps, but I
can't remember the keystroke, nor can I find the article anywhere and
its not in the manual anywhere? Any ideas how to get good freeze frame
digitizing from the AG1960 or what the keystroke might be?
Thanks,
Terry
